Description: Practical UML Statecharts in C/C++ Second Edition bridges the gap between high-level abstract concepts of the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and the actual programming aspects of modern hierarchical state machines (UML statecharts). The book describes a lightweight, open source, event-driven infrastructure, called QP that enables direct manual coding UML statecharts and concurrent event-driven applications in C or C++ without big tools. This book is presented in two parts. In Part I, you get a practical description of the relevant state machine concepts starting from traditional finite state automata to modern UML state machines followed by state machine coding techniques and state-machine design patterns, all illustrated with executable examples. In Part II, you find a detailed design study of a generic real-time framework indispensable for combining concurrent, event-driven state machines into robust applications. Part II begins with a clear explanation of the key event-driven programming concepts such as inversion of control (Hollywood Principle), blocking versus non-blocking code, run-to-completion (RTC) execution semantics, the importance of event queues, dealing with time, and the role of state machines to maintain the context from one event to the next. This background is designed to help software developers in making the transition from the traditional sequential to the modern event-driven programming, which can be one of the trickiest paradigm shifts. The lightweight QP event-driven infrastructure goes several steps beyond the traditional real-time operating system (RTOS). In the simplest configuration, QP runs on bare-metal microprocessor, microcontroller, or DSP completely replacing the RTOS. QP can also work with almost any OS/RTOS to take advantage of the existing device drivers, communication stacks, and other middleware. The accompanying website to this book contains complete open source code for QP, ports to popular processors and operating systems, including 80x86, ARM Cortex-M3, MSP430, and Linux, as well as all examples described in the book.
*Focuses on core concepts rather than tools which are always changing allowing the reader to continue to use this information with various projects *Provides a complete, ready-to-use, open source software architecture for small and large embedded systems *Includes an extensive example using the ARM Cortex-M3 throughout the book highlighting issues programmers and architects encounter in everyday life

Description: Nearly all industrial processes require objects to be moved, manipulated or subjected to some sort of force. This is frequently accomplished by means of electrical equipment (such as motors or solenoids), or via devices driven by air (pneumatics) or liquids (hydraulics).
This book has been written by a process control engineer as a guide to the operation of hydraulic and pneumatic systems for all engineers and technicians who wish to have an insight into the components and operation of such a system.
This second edition has been fully updated to include all recent developments such as the increasing use of proportional valves, and includes an extra expanded section on industrial safety. It will prove indispensable to all those wishing to learn about hydraulics and pneumatics.
* Gives more essential, but simple maths on pipe flow and pressure drops
* Offers the latest information on proportional valves and the electronics cards now appearing in hydraulic systems
* Includes a new section on safety including European legislation

Description: This is the standard text for introductory advanced undergraduate and first-year graduate level courses in signal processing. The text gives a coherent and exhaustive treatment of discrete-time linear systems, sampling, filtering and filter design, reconstruction, the discrete-time Fourier and z-transforms, Fourier analysis of signals, the fast Fourier transform, and spectral estimation. The author develops the basic theory independently for each of the transform domains and provides illustrative examples throughout to aid the reader. Discussions of applications in the areas of speech processing, consumer electronics, acoustics, radar, geophysical signal processing, and remote sensing help to place the theory in context. The text assumes a background in advanced calculus, including an introduction to complex variables and a basic familiarity with signals and linear systems theory. If you have this background, the book forms an up-to-date and self-contained introduction to discrete-time signal processing that is appropriate for students and researchers. Discrete-Time Signal Processing also includes an extensive bibliography.

Description: Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are revolutionizing digital signal processing as novel FPGA families are replacing ASICs and PDSPs for front-end digital signal processing algorithms. So the efficient implementation of these algorithms is critical and is the main goal of this book. It starts with an overview of today's FPGA technology, devices, and tools for designing state-of-the-art DSP systems. A case study in the first chapter is the basis for more than 40 design examples throughout. The following chapters deal with computer arithmetic concepts, theory and the implementation of FIR and IIR filters, multirate digital signal processing systems, DFT and FFT algorithms, advanced algorithms with high future potential, and adaptive filters. Each chapter contains exercises. The VERILOG source code and a glossary are given in the appendices, while the accompanying CD-ROM contains the examples in VHDL and Verilog code as well as the newest Altera "Quartus II web edition" software. This edition has a new chapter on microprocessors, new sections on special functions using MAC calls, intellectual property core design and arbitrary sampling rate converters, and over 100 new exercises.
