El propósito de esta recopilación es hacer accesible para los estudiosos del tema, los escritos sobre Puerto Rico que se encuentran en la Historia general y natural de las Indias del cronista Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdés (1478-1557). Además presenta una interpretación antropológica de esta obra. A diferencia de la Historia Geográfica, Civil y Natural de la isla de San Juan Bautista de Puerto Rico (1788) de fray Ãñigo Abad y Lasierra que ha circulado ampliamente en Puerto Rico, la Historia de Fernández de Oviedo es casi desconocida en su totalidad, a pesar de la valiosa información que contiene. En la Conquista y colonización de la Isla de Puerto Rico se menciona los sucesos ocurridos durante los primeros años de la conquista de Puerto Rico por Juan Ponce de León. El resto del texto se ilustra con grabados y dibujos de la propia Historia de Fernández de Oviedo y de otras fuentes como Theodore de Bry. El texto consta de 120 páginas.
