A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols under The Classical Store
Price: $16.98
Sale: $9.96

Manufacturer: EMI Classics

Description: This disc could be more succinctly titled Christmas for Anglophiles. Few sounds are more British than the boy soprano-dominated Choir of King's College in Cambridge. And the group is heard--in some sections recorded live--in an actual Christmastide service amid the generous reverberation of a cathedral acoustic with little more than a tasteful though austere organ accompaniment. The repertoire isn't just conservative, traditional hymns and carols. One is harmonized by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and there are a number of contributions by contemporary composers Thomas Adès, Judith Weir, and John Tavener, all of which are probing, sincere, even personal examples of their art (and some are daringly liberated, harmonically speaking). The downside for some listeners--at least on repeated hearings--is that the entire service is heard, sermons and all. Others may take this in the spirit of a Paul McCreesh liturgical reconstruction, with congregational singing included. --David Patrick Stearns

  Andre Rieu - Tuscany

Andre Rieu - Tuscany under The Classical Store
Price: $19.98
Sale: $12.64

Manufacturer: Denon Records
Number of Items: 1

Description: Those who have enjoyed this program on PBS need only be told that it is available on home video. André Rieu is a master of light classical music, and here he is at his best. The program was taped live, outdoors in the Piazza de la Republica in the Italian cty of Cortona. Rieu addresses the audience in fluent but sometimes charmingly awkward Italian, with English subtitles. From the opening moments he has the vast crowd in the palm of his hand. They whistle for him in "Chanson d'amour," clap in unison for the "Toreador Song" from Carmen, the "Radetzky" march, and the galloping finales of the William Tell and Light Cavalry overtures, and sing along in "La donna e mobile," the drinking song from La traviata, and, most movingly, the Italian national anthem and "Va pensiero," which is almost a national anthem.

The music is basic classical top-40, with an emphasis on opera and a lot of Italian music, including "The Carnival of Venice" and the Grand March from Aida. The performances are full of energy and technically skilled. Rieu conducts, plays his violin, and generously shares the spotlight, notably with soprano Carmen Monarca, mezzo-soprano Carla Malfioletti, and several singing and dancing young ladies who might have stepped out of a Botticelli painting. Visuals include, besides the concert, a charming Tuscan landscape and a ride in a Venetian gondola. --Joe McLellan

  Time to Say Goodbye

Time to Say Goodbye under The Classical Store
Price: $17.98
Sale: $6.36

Manufacturer: Angel Records

Description: Fans of small, pretty-voiced soprano Sarah Brightman will not be disappointed by this CD. In addition to some pop songs, Brightman sings high-flying excerpts from Orff's Carmina Burana, Puccini's "O mio babbino caro" (performed better by almost any other operatic soprano elsewhere), and "Alleluia" from Mozart's Exsultate Jubilate. One might call this a crossover disc; others might just see it as a recording featuring a pop singer with artsy aspirations. Whatever it is, Brightman's fans love her; others do not. Two duets with tenor Jose Cura remind the listener what opera singing really ought to sound like. --Robert Levine

Andrea Bocelli - Sacred Arias / Myung-Whun Chung

Andrea Bocelli - Sacred Arias / Myung-Whun Chung under The Classical Store
Price: $18.98
Sale: $10.01

Manufacturer: Philips

Description: When he was growing up, Andrea Bocelli recalls finding inspiration in a favorite recording of sacred music performed by tenor legend Franco Corelli. Bocelli--who in the meantime has come to inspire millions of fiercely loyal fans himself--returns to the genre as the guiding theme of Sacred Arias, the release of which coincides with the first English-language biography of the singer. These performances are filled with the singer's phenomenally well-known vocal signature: his flair for long, sweetly floating high notes and the gentle sense of cadence he brings to a melody. It's a mistake to compartmentalize Bocelli into a singer of "operatic" versus "popular" styles: in truth his approach is at heart the same. Lack of color and control in his phrasing remains a drawback, but the emotional empathy Bocelli evokes is never in doubt. The arias collected here sample some of the most famous devotional pieces: Schubert's "Ave Maria" and Mozart's transporting "Ave Verum," as well as an arrangement of "Silent Night" in which Bocelli tries out his English. There's also a decidedly odd choice of bedfellows for a program of "sacred" music, such as a song from Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder (whose "angel" is the object of an overpoweringly erotic attraction) and Handel's figurative ode to a tree, "Ombra mai fu." Still, Bocelli sings with an unfeigned directness that is sure to expand his already enormous following even further. --Thomas May

Description: In another original pairing violinist Hilary Hahn brings together the familiar, highly commercial and long-awaited recording of the famous Sibelius Violin Concerto with the rarely performed Violin Concerto by Arnold Schoenberg. Hahn brings out the romantic qualities of Schoenberg's Concerto--known as one of the most difficult pieces in the violin repertoire--showing why it makes an ideal coupling with the Sibelius--"Hahn didn't merely play the notes, she passionately engaged with them." (The Daily Telegraph on a live performance of the Schoenberg Violin Concerto). As both an acclaimed Sibelius interpreter and a known advocate of 20th-century music in concert halls worldwide, Esa-Pekka Salonen is the ideal musical partner in this project.

Description: Recorded live at the Centro de Acción Social por la Música, Sala Simón Bolívar, January 2008. An album everyone has been waiting for! Gustavo Dudamel and the SBYOV have stunned audiences worldwide with their explosive Latin-American showpieces. Now they deliver this repertoire on record, from a searing live concert in Caracas earlier this year. No other conductor or orchestra in the world could deliver a recording like this. Passion and excitement are guaranteed! "It's all about dance, about rhythm," says Dudamel, and his orchestra responds in kind, swaying and bending to the music, conveying utter joy and excitement in the music of their Southern hemisphere. The recording juxtaposes contrasting showpieces such as the Stravinsky-esque rhythmic drive of Revueltas's Sensemaya, the expansive lusciousness of Danzón no. 2 by Arturo Marquez and the vibrant ballet suite Estancia by Ginastera. The concert concludes with a sizzling performance of Mambo from Bernstein's West Side Story. The dynamic cover art displays the moment when the musicians are revealed dressed in their national colors - now a well known signature of the SBYOV, as is the blistering energy and exuberance with which they perform these pieces.

  Vivere Live in Tuscany [CD/DVD]

Vivere Live in Tuscany [CD/DVD] under The Classical Store
Price: $24.98
Sale: $14.42

Manufacturer: Decca

Description: Disc One is an eight song CD and Disc Two is a full length DVD: Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli grew up in Lajatico, a rural village in Tuscany, where his family still farms nearby. Last July, on the slopes of his ancient hill town, a special theater was constructed for a one-night-only concert of his greatest popular hits along with new songs performed to honor the occasion. Some famous musical friends dropped by and the magical result is Andrea Bocelli Vivere Live in Tuscany.

Joining Andrea for the new songs are grandissimo sassofonista Kenny G, trumpeter Chris Botti, piano virtuoso Lang Lang, Italian pop star Eliza, and legendary musician, songwriter and producer David Foster. Helping with the hits: favorite divas Sarah Brightman, Heather Headley and Laura Pausini.

Surveying the breathtaking landscape that provides the backdrop for the festivities, Bocelli introduces the telecast with the passion of a true Toscano. It s my land, he says, a land that loves silence as much as I do. If I break this silence with my voice, it s because I want to pay tribute. Music penetrates this land; it flows across it and flies off far away. It s a message of love.

Musical highlights include the song that launched Bocelli s career, Il Mare Calmo Della Sera ; the one that brought him international stardom, Time to Say Goodbye, in duet with Sarah Brightman; Laura Pausini joining him for Dare to Live ( Vivere ); Bocelli and Heather Headley reprising the popular Vivo Per Lei, plus several new selections from the just-released The Best of Andrea Bocelli - Vivere album (Sugar Music/Decca). Also featured is a meltingly romantic medley of songs from his 2006 collection, Amore: Bésame Mucho, Somos Novios ( It s Impossible ) and I Can t Help Falling in Love with You.
