Description: The Magic School Bus heads for the sky and Ms. Frizzle's elementary school students learn all about flying and outer space in this trio of episodes. In "Magic School Bus Gets Lost in Space," a class field trip to the planetarium goes awry, so Ms. Frizzle heads the bus toward outer space for a tour of the planets in our solar system. Arnold's cousin Janet quickly exchanges skepticism for awe and becomes obsessed with gathering proof of her space travels--a quest that ultimately sets Ms. Frizzle floating loose in outer space. The gang returns to space to destroy an asteroid headed for their school in "Out of This World," learning all about orbits, comets, and asteroids along the way. Finally, the class discovers how air movement and wing design affect flight when they take a ride in Wanda and Tim's experimental remote-controlled airplane in "Taking Flight." DVD extras include an interactive "field trip" with onscreen facts about the planets in our solar system; English, French, or Spanish languages; and a DVD-ROM space adventure maze and instructions for building a mobile of the solar system. Description: This is an impressive-looking version of Lewis Carroll's story originally produced for NBC-TV. Dreading a singing recital at her parents' lavish home, Alice falls into a strange world in pursuit of a large White Rabbit. The talented child actor Tina Majorino (Corrina, Corrina) plays Alice with all the good graces but mostly wanders through the story unquestioningly. Carroll's tale of whimsical, illogical adventures is a field day for designers Roger Hall and Alan Tomkins, costumer Charles Knode, Jim Henson's Creature Shop, and director Nick Willing (Photographing Fairies. Influenced by Time Bandits and Labyrinth (the latter also designed by the Henson company), the film has a splendid array of effects, many dealing with multiple perspectives as Alice constantly changes sizes. The highlight is Whoopi Goldberg as the Cheshire Cat, a seamless mix of cat and comic. Martin Short as the Hatter and Mirandra Richardson as the Queen of Hearts seem to be having the times of their lives. This is not the definitive version of Carroll's tale, and, like the popular Disney animated version, combines some elements of Carroll's sequel, Through the Looking Glass. It is perhaps better viewing for the fan that has seen another version of the tale or read the book. --Doug Thomas

Description: Don't waste this one on your children: buy it for yourself. A spectacular adaptation of the Anna Sewell novel, this is faithful to the source material but creates a life of its own on the screen. Told from the point of view of the horse, it recalls a time and a place that could be both beautiful and cruel. Black Beauty faced both hardship and kindness as he passed through the hands of many owners throughout his life. Some are generous, but the agonies endured by the title character may be too harsh for small children. Unfortunately, director Caroline Thompson did not resurrect her magical touch a few years later with another animal tale, Buddy. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Description: A beloved children's band from Australia, The Wiggles are four music-making guys: Jeff, Murray, Greg, and Anthony. When the Big Red Car (a whimsical dune buggy) won't start, or as the Wiggles say, no "Chugga, Cugga, Toot, Toot!," it's an ideal time to sing and dance. There are songs about walking across the street and eating foods that are healthy as well as some that are more familiar like "Head, Shoulder, Knees, and Toes" and "Look Both Ways." The lads stir up a whole lot of energy with the help of their costumed friends, including Wags the Dog, Officer Beaples, Dorothy the Dinosaur, Captain FeatherSword, and Zardo Zap. Their videos have a retro '60s feel, very upbeat and fun. It's easy to see why they are so popular in the land down under. Ages 3 to 6. --Peggy Maltby-Etra

Description: Arthur, the hapless, hugely popular star of his own TV series, probably knows on some subconscious level that by anticipating the perfect Christmas, he's setting himself up for a fiasco. That's just the sort of world-weary 8-year-old aardvark he is. Nevertheless, he and his pals are hopeful that this year, even though it's already the 22nd and there's no snow on the ground, heavy-duty wish fulfillment, or at least a good time, will be had by all. Well-heeled classmate Muffy is hard at work on the good time part, but she's too busy broadcasting the news of her pull-out-all-the-stops party to pay attention when the increasingly frustrated Francine begs off because of Hanukkah commitments. Buster Baxter, meanwhile, has his hands full getting his guilt-ridden divorced mom to mellow out. And Arthur's knee-deep in his own predicaments: DW demands he draft the perfect letter to Santa; his dad deserts the annual turkey in favor of a historically correct Christmas dinner; and he feels like a dufus, as he puts it, when, on Christmas morning, he drops and breaks the perfect present he bought for his mother. Fortunately, there's nothing a few well-chosen words from a grownup like his Uncle Fred can't fix, and the others also finagle a way around their differences--the holiday spirit sneaks up and smiles on everybody. The one-hour video is pleasantly paced and gets extra spice from a handful of original songs and a few far-fetched, genuinely funny Arthur fantasy segments. Guaranteed to make any Arthur fan's spirits bright. --Tammy La Gorce

Description: In the classic tradition of Disney's animated feature films, the first Winnie The Pooh theatrical feature in 23 years weaves magical storytelling, charming characters, and memorable songs into an enchanting tale of adventure and heart. As it happens, the whole gang is busy preparing a suitably gloomy winter home for Eeyore. When everything they do seems to get undone by Tigger's exuberant bouncing, Rabbit suggests Tigger go outside and find other tiggers to bounce with -- a notion Tigger finds ridiculous because after all, he's "the onliest one!" Or is he? And so begins Tigger's amazing journey to find his family. This whimsical and touching film will bounce right into your heart -- and feet.

Description: The best, original Scooby-Doo animated movie seen for some years, Scooby-Doo and the Goblin King is genuinely imaginative, fun, and full of surprises--particularly in its vocal casting. Besides the usual group--Casey Kasem still going strong as the voice of Shaggy (since 1969), Frank Welker as both Scooby-Doo and Mystery Inc.'s leader, Fred, Mindy Cohn as Velma and Grey DeLisle as Daphne--Goblin King features Wallace Shawn, Lauren Bacall, Tim Curry and Wayne Knight in substantial roles. The lively story finds the Mystery Inc. gang enjoying a Halloween night at a carnival, where a hack magician (Knight) steals the power of a fairy on unauthorized leave from the spirit world. Faced with a threat to Fred, Velma, and Daphne, Shaggy and Scooby enter that parallel dimension overrun by elves, headless horsemen, witches, a talking pumpkin, etc. Their mission is to get to the Goblin King (Curry), who can stop the magician’s feverish quest for more and more power. The story is endlessly colorful and sharp, more of a fable than the average Scooby-Doo cartoon as Shaggy and Scooby, unlikely heroes, wander through a wonderland of ghouls for an answer. --Tom Keogh

Description: This sweet, heartwarming 1973 offering from the Peanuts gang (and Charles Schulz) once again shows Charlie Brown in a pickle, as his erstwhile friends impose upon the hapless would-be-host to provide a memorable and traditional Thanksgiving feast. And as much as Charlie Brown would rather forget the whole thing, he just can't help but try for fear of being labeled a failure. Ultimately it's up to Snoopy and Woodstock to save Charlie from certain embarrassment, and it falls to Linus to impart to all assembled the true meaning of Thanksgiving. This very special Emmy Award-winning cartoon features the usual sweet unassuming humor that only the Peanuts can provide, along with the melodic Vince Guaraldi score, and is one of those childhood classics meant to be enjoyed again and again. --Robert Lane

Description: First released in France, Luc Besson's Arthur and the Invisibles is a touching computer animated adventure that makes up in look and in character for what it lacks in narrative originality. As a direct hybrid of Excalibur and A Bug's Life, Arthur stars a heroic ten year-old, Arthur (Freddie Highmore), who draws a sword from a stone to fight a miniature battle in the garden before finding treasure valuable enough to save his grandfather's farm from purchase by developers. Arthur's grandfather, Archibald, having long ago discovered the miniscule world of Minimoys, garden gnome-like elves that lived in his yard, shrunk himself in order to hunt elusive rubies that were hidden in their evil Mecropolis, headed by Maltazard (David Bowie). Now Arthur must assist the benevolent Minimoy clan, ruled by The King (Robert De Niro) and Princess Selenia (Madonna), in challenging Maltazard for possession of the jewels. Shots taking the viewer down through grass blades into the microscopic, yet gigantic yard world readjust one's sense of size, as do scenes, for example, in which a small, elven Arthur fights mosquitoes with catapulted tomatoes. Meanwhile, live action scenes of Arthur's worried grandmother (Mia Farrow) provide respite from a completely computerized world. Bowie, as he did in Legend, steals the show, bringing to life his Darth Vader-like character who chose evil over good in a past adventure. Corny one-liners sometimes spoil the mood, but overall the film's thematic blend of fantasy and environmentalism, like Princess Mononoke, will delight children with its positive message. --Trinie Dalton

Description: Based on Jill Murphy's book, this charming movie is set in an English boarding school for witches--complete with orange and black school uniforms, broom-flying exercises, and potion assignments for lab. The incompetent student of the title, Mildred, is played by a fetching young Fairuza Balk. Diana Rigg is the nasty head teacher, Tim Curry the (oddly) idolized Grand Wizard, and TV's Facts of Life maven Charlotte Rae does double duty as the school's kindly dean and her evil witch twin, who's bent on taking over the school. Directed by Robert Young, this 68-minute video features less than state-of-the-art effects and several songs that stop the action--most bizarrely an outdoor assembly performance by Curry that turns into a weird music video. Still, preteen girls will identify with the beleaguered heroine who overcomes her wickedly snooty rival, a teacher who doesn't believe in her, and a band of dastardly witches and, of course, saves the day.
