Description: Right now, Truth is under attack, and much is at stake. Christians are caught in the crossfire of alternative Christian histories, emerging faulty texts, and a cultural push to eliminate absolute Truth altogether. As a result, many churches and Christians have been deceived. Worse still, they propagate the deception that poses itself as Truth! In The Truth War John MacArthur reclaims the unwavering certainty of God's Truth and anchors Christians in the eternal, immovable promises that are found in His Word.

Review Summary: John MacArthur's Truth War is solid, but vague, work Date: 2009-01-05

Details: In the early 1990's John MacArthur, pastor of Grace Community Church and radio talk show host of Grace to You, wrote a scathing critique of the charismatic movement in Charismatic Chaos. Carefully documenting example after example of how the modern-day "faith healers" preached and lived contradictory to Biblical principles, his controversial book lives on as one of the most damning pieces against charismatic theology today. Earlier this year MacArthur wrote The Truth War which, after reading the early reviews, seemed to be a similar critical treatise against the ECM.

It was. And wasn't. Meaning that, while MacArthur did produce a work detailing and defending the final and absolute truth of Scripture, he mainly chose to concentrate on the importance of truth rather than cite numerous examples of how truth was being attacked by members of the ECM. This time around he reserves much of his criticism for a relatively small number of individuals, namely Brian Maclaren (who receives the bulk of specific references and criticism) and Doug Pagitt, both recognized leaders of the ECM.

Most of the book, however, focuses on why the truth is important and why Christians must be prepared to defend it - at all costs. He calls the battle over truth "the one thing in this world the church is supposed to fight for. Lose that fight and all else is lost." He adds, "Truth - including historical facts, assurance, and objective, distinct, knowable, authoritative propositions that demand to be embraced as true - is an essential concept in authentic Christianity. All the other aspects of religious experience flow from the truth we believe and simply give expression to it. Take away the ground of truth, and all you have is fluctuating religious sentiment." Using the book of Jude for his primary text, MacArthur goes on to Biblically establish the importance of the fight for truth.

MacArthur also does a good job of showing that the fight for truth is one the church has fought since its very existence. He chronicles the history of different groups that spouted heresies in the early church such as the Judaizers and Gnostics. He also states that heresy can often result from subtle shifts away from orthodox theology. To make this point he looks at the examples of Sabellianism and Arianism.

MacArthur is not dealing in mere history lessons, here. His whole purpose is to demonstrate that the modern church can learn much from understanding how spiritual threats and theological error were dealt with in the past. He teaches Christians today how high the stakes are by showing how Athanasius and other Christian leaders from the past were willing to give their lives in the defense of Biblical orthodoxy.

MacArthur does a great job of using Scripture and church history to emphasize the importance of defending Biblical truth. MacArthur is at his finest when expositing Scripture and his analysis of the passages in Jude are enlightening and revealing. The book is worth reading for the exposition of these verses alone.

While the book contains bits and pieces of theology, history, and philosophy, its best feature is that it is also highly practical. Encouraging Christians to practice spiritual discernment, a sorely lacking trait in evangelical churches today, he gives pragmatic and constructive guidelines on how to do so. For example, in a section entitled "How to Spot an Apostate" he tells believers to look at the messenger's conduct, character and creed to determine if their ministry is Biblical.

As an added bonus, MacArthur has updated a chapter from his 1994 book, Reckless Faith, entitled "Why Discernment is Out of Fashion" and included it as an appendix to The Truth War. This chapter includes great material on exercising discernment and supplements the topic well.

The Emerging Church Movement (ECM) is a vague description of a number of different churches and preachers with different theologies and philosophies. Lacking any kind of organizational structure or official authorities, a vast range of authors and preachers have been labeled as being part of the ECM. Unfortunately, MacArthur only adds to the confusion here. Pastors and authors like Mark Driscoll, Rob Bell, and Brian Maclaren are all targets of MacArthur's criticism but MacArthur either didn't care to distinguish the many differences and beliefs between this wide range of church leaders or was seemingly ignorant of any distinction. Many readers of MacArthur, a Reformed and orthodox pastor, will be introduced to the ECM by this book and I can't help but think that there will now be even more confusion by the term "emerging" than there already was. MacArthur should have been more careful to not have used such a wide brush in painting the Emerging Church.

Review Summary: Disingenuous at best. Date: 2008-12-06

Details: Probably not worth the time unless you're a fundamentalist Christian who needs an affirmation of your belief that the church is under attack from all directions including within.

Review Summary: The Truth War - Must Read Date: 2008-11-16

Details: John MacArthur will open your eyes to reality in this book. So many are caught up into deception during this present age. This book will help you get back to a focus on the truth. And, it will help you understand how so many have departed from the truth.

Review Summary: Finally a balanced view Date: 2008-08-07

Details: This is a very timely book. John does a great job at exposing the various errant teachings of the seeker friendly and The Emergent Church. There is so much deception today and some is very subtle. John does a thorough and scholarly examination of the present beliefs. Tell me what you think of my Christian fiction novel..The Palace Theatre

Review Summary: A Good Book, Backed by Scripture Date: 2008-07-24

Details: We can ignore the hard truths of scripture all we want, but this will not change that truth. John MacArthur's The Truth War uses God's Word to fend off attacks of those who wish to bend, twist, even break the truth to justify the lives that they want to live. It is an eye opening book that will change the way you think about some of the oldest heresies that are being passed off as new ideas.
