Description: Pioneering historian, sociologist, editor, novelist, poet, and organizer, W. E. B. Du Bois was one of the foremost African American intellectuals of the twentieth century. While Du Bois is remembered for his monumental contributions to scholarship and civil rights activism, the spiritual aspects of his work have been misunderstood, even negated. W. E. B. Du Bois, American Prophet, the first religious biography of this leader, illuminates the spirituality that is essential to understanding his efforts and achievements in the political and intellectual world. Often labeled an atheist, Du Bois was in fact deeply and creatively involved with religion. Historian Edward J. Blum reveals how spirituality was central to Du Bois's approach to Marxism, pan-Africanism, and nuclear disarmament, his support for black churches, and his reckoning of the spiritual wage of white supremacy. His writings, teachings, and prayers served as articles of faith for fellow activists of his day, from student book club members to Langston Hughes. A blend of history, sociology, literary criticism, and religious reflection in the model of Du Bois's best work, W. E. B. Du Bois, American Prophet recasts the life of this great visionary and intellectual for a new generation of scholars and activists.

Review Summary: Blum is a Brilliant Historian |

Details: "W.E.B. Du Bois, American Prophet," by Edward J. Blum, is an insightful book that contributes a uniquely spiritual perspective on the life and work of Du Bois. Blum argues that historians have overlooked the importance of Du Bois religious and spiritual thought. In particular, Blum investigates the inner workings of Du Bois civil rights masterpiece, "The Souls of Black Folk," and of how it spiritually affected his followers. In addition, Du Bois' various writings and autobiographical work are analyzed. Ultimately, it is found that Du Bois often responded to black suffering and injustice with his religious convictions; thus the secularization of historical studies related to Du Bois are missing the essential element of his spirituality. It is also interesting to read about Du Bois conflicts with the black religious community, whether in the case of individuals or entire churches, and of how this played into his own view of life and personal identity. Blum is a fluid writer, and although the work is academic, it is both profound and easy to read. All in all, an excellent contribution to modern historical study by a promising young scholar. |

Details: Blum obviously knew this man to be more than what he is taken for, bringing to light some of the faulty beliefs most people carry about DuBois. Blum paints a clear picture of a religious social activist and goes into great detail to describe the ideas, works, and life of a great man. This is a great reference book and insight to a man who elevated himself and helped elevate African Americans during a time of great prejudice in our country. A tough read, however worthwhile. Highly recommended. |

Details: Edward Blum's novel of W.E.B. DuBois depicts an important aspect of his life that is often seen as nonexistent or is completely overlooked or misinterpreted: Religion and spirituality. From his Ph D from Harvard to his decision to join the Communist Party, Blum describes DuBois's life events and unveils their religious side with plenty of evidence to back it up. DuBois was an important figure in American history; fighting for equality and integration. It was enjoyable to learn this side of DuBois and I would highly recommend this book!! |

Details: While the book on Du Bois may appear daunting especially if being used for research it is a very positive look into the part of Du Bois life that is commonly misrepresented, his involvement in religion. Worth the time to learn the truth behind the life of an important man in African American historian and truly understand his real beliefs and style. Good read. |

Review Summary: A New Perspective |

Details: In this novel Blum outlines a new way for historians to examine W.E.B. DuBois and his "religious self." Many historians believe that DuBois was not a religious man, or he demonstrated very little in the way of his faith. Obviously they weren't reseacrching very hard, because there is more than enough evidence in this novel to prove all historians wrong. This book was a tough read for me, but the book is extremely detailed and I was left with hardly any unanswered questions about DuBois's "religiousness." A definate read for anyone learning about W.E.B. DuBois. |
