Description: The sign outside the conservative, white church in the small southern U.S. town announces that the church is part of the Episcopal Church--of Rwanda. In Anglican Communion in Crisis, Miranda Hassett tells the fascinating story of how a new alliance between conservative American Episcopalians and African Anglicans is transforming conflicts between American Episcopalians--especially over homosexuality--into global conflicts within the Anglican church. In the mid-1990s, conservative American Episcopalians and Anglican leaders from Africa and other parts of the Southern Hemisphere began to forge ties in opposition to the American Episcopal Church's perceived liberalism and growing toleration of homosexuality. This resulted in dozens of American Episcopal churches submitting to the authority of African bishops. Based on wide research, interviews with key participants and observers, and months Hassett spent in a southern U.S. parish of the Episcopal Church of Rwanda and in Anglican communities in Uganda, Anglican Communion in Crisis is the first anthropological examination of the coalition between American Episcopalians and African Anglicans. The book challenges common views--that the relationship between the Americans and Africans is merely one of convenience or even that the Americans bought the support of the Africans. Instead, Hassett argues that their partnership is a deliberate and committed movement that has tapped the power and language of globalization in an effort to move both the American Episcopal Church and the worldwide Anglican Communion to the right.

Description: Jeremy Young Foreword by Prof. Norman K. Gottwald Using the analogy of an abusive human relationship, Young traces the influence of the psychology of such behavior on the major monotheistic religions? concept of God and concludes that such imagery generates violence in the name of God in the contemporary world, including in "the war on terror." Explores these theological themes in terms of U.S. imperialistic policies, the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, and Jihadist ideology. Jeremy Young plunges into the most difficult questions for those who take biblical faith seriously. He has done his homework on the way in which the Bible (and the God of the Bible) are exemplars of violence. But he does not stop there; he extends his interpretation to exhibit the ways in which this trajectory of violence reaches into contemporary abusive practices and shamelessly violent policies. The connection he makes between the Bible and contemporary ideology is nearly unbearable. Young intends it to be unbearable, and his book is as demanding call for rethinking and acting afresh. This is a most timely statement, and as important as it is timely. - Walter Brueggemann, Columbia Theological Seminary, September 24, 2007 "A stunning book - a whole new way of looking at what may be the leading issue of our era - an agonizing assessment of the relationship between the alarmingly abusive and truly liberating aspects of the Bible. Young presents carefully reasoned arguments and exhibits humility in the face of so much that we do not really know about God or ourselves? he has given us much to think and do something about." - Norman K. Gottwald, emeritus professor of Biblical studies, New York Theological Seminary, and adjunct professor of Old Testament, Pacific School of Religion

Description: Simple, beautiful songs for worship, readily accessible to singers in any size congregation. Includes songs in unison, simple harmony parts, and rounds; most can be sung unaccompanied. Specifically geared to evening and night-time liturgies, often the times of choice for alternative worship, though many can be used at other times. Original music by variety of composers, written to be taught by rote and sung without printed music. Includes teaching notes to help the lead musician be successful. The contributors to this songbook are committed to encouraging a new sacred folk music - music that we can teach to and sing with one another without a hymnal or a piece of paper in our hands. This original music is simple and repetitive, yet holds incredible depth. It allows congregations to become communal music-makers, learning to sing and improvise together in a vital way.

Description: In this book distinguished theologian, teacher and writer Francis Sullivan examines the origins and development of the episcopacy in the early church. One of the issues he concentrates on in particular is the church-dividing character of the question whether bishops are the successors of the apostles by divine institution, with the consequence that valid ministry depends on ordination by bishops in the historical apostolic succession. Ecumenical dialogues have produced no agreement on this matter. On the one hand Catholics, Orthodox and most Anglicans teach that episcopal ordination in the apostolic succession is necessary for valid orders and ministry. But Protestants insist that there is no evidence in the New Testament for a divine institution of the episcopate. Using primary sources, Sullivan explores evidence for the development of the episcopate, first in the New Testament, then in Christian writings up to the middle of the third century. His thought-provoking work will be welcomed by professional theologians and serious students of theology, for whom it will prove to be an important resource for further ecclesiological study.
