Description:
This is the first-ever English-language edition of the book Leo Tolstoy considered to be his most important contribution to humanity, the work of his life's last years. Widely read in prerevolutionary Russia, banned and forgotten under Communism; and recently rediscovered to great excitement, A Calendar of Wisdom is a day-by-day guide that illuminates the path of a life worth living with a brightness undimmed by time. Unjustly censored for nearly a century, it deserves to be placed with the few books in our history that will never cease teaching us the essence of what is important in this world.
Details: This book was given to my husband by friends. Since then I have given 9 books to friends. I read it first thing every morning. The book is thought provoking, inspiring, and certainly full of wisdom I would highly recommend it.
Review Summary: Great book that can be better
Date: 2009-01-03
Details: This is a fantastic work, loaded with spiritual wisdom. Anyone who admires Tolstoy's beliefs or his writing should read it. The topics and sources are widespread and worthwhile.
My only gripe is that each daily page is not very well organized. Many pages include both a few quotes from various sages along with commentary by Tolstoy. The only problem is that it's very hard to tell where Tolstoy's thoughts end and someone else's begin. The editors could have made that a little easier to follow.
Also, many times the source of the quote will say something like "after Marcus Aurelius" or "after Cicero." I would have benefitted from an explanation of what "after" means. Are these Tolstoy's thoughts immediately after reading these men?
Despite the who's saying what dilemma, I loved reading this book. Highly recommend.
Review Summary: Wisdom from Tolstoy
Date: 2008-04-09
Details: A fantastic book! It's written in a 365 day format so you can pick it up on any day and start there. Some of his wisdoms need to be taken one day at a time other times I found myself reading days or weeks ahead they were so interesting.
His wisdom is timeless, obviously Tolstoy was a man ahead of his time. He has a quote for everyday from some famous text or other sometimes biblical, but not always.
I really enjoyed it.

Details: I really enjoy this book. The amazing collection of quotes and thoughts make this very worthwhile. There is at least one thought each day that really sticks with me. I know that I will be reading it day by day for years and always finding new things to think about and take away.
