Description: This study introduces the different aspects of the study of the apostle Paul, primarily to the differing positions and methods developed by contemporary scholars in Pauline studies. By setting out these views, and the evidence on which they are based, Horrell equips the reader to approach the study of Paul, with an awareness of the range of current debate and knowledge of the evidence and arguments they will encounter. After considering Paul's importance and influence, and the important sources for the study of Paul, the book examines: the earliest period of Christianity - from Jesus to Paul; Paul's life before and after his 'conversion'; his individual letters; the major elements of his theology; his attitude to Israel and the Jewish law; new approaches to the study of Paul, including social-scientific and feminist approaches; and Paul's legacy in the New Testament and beyond. In this second edition, the discussion of Pauline studies is brought right up-to-date. Sections dealing with areas of ongoing debate (e.g. on the 'new perspective'; the social level of the Pauline Christians) have been extended in the light of the most recent discussion. New sections have been added on: Paul's 'worlds' (Jewish and Greco-Roman: ch. 1); Paul's use of scripture (in ch. 5); and Political dimensions of Paul's gospel (ch. 7). The bibliography and suggestions for further reading are updated and each chapter includes a list of study questions.

Description: The most famous conversion in history-when Saul became Paul-was a trick. It was actually Jesus appearing to him. Jesus did not die on the cross but was rescued and sheltered by James, Peter, and Mary Magdalene. But they prefer to keep Paul in the dark. Now imprisoned by Nero, Peter finally tells Paul the truth before their deaths.

Description: Veronica Koperski's addition to the much-lauded What Are They Saying About (WATSA) series presents an overview of recent scholarly debate about Paul and the Law with attention to its historical roots. Chapter one treats scholars who basically remain within the tradition of Luther/Bultmann in asserting that the Law fosters a prideful attitude. Chapters two and three deal with the "new perspective on Paul" initiated with the publications of E. P. Sanders in the 1970s and 1980s. Chapter four presents scholars who, although sensitive to the work of Sanders, reiterate some of the traditional Luther/Bultmann position. In chapter five the focus is Paul's consistency, and chapter six explores scholarship opining that justification by faith can no longer be considered the center of Paul's theology. Readers will always find the best and the most recent scholarship in a WATSA book. This one will especially enlighten: · Scholars who are non-specialists in Paul · Graduate and seminary students who have had a course in Paul · Pastors who are interested in updating their knowledge · Persons active in the Lutheran/Catholic dialogue

Description: I Corinthians is Volume 32 in the Anchor Bible series of new book-by-book translations of the Old and New Testaments and Apocrypha. William S. Orr and James Arthur Walther are, respectively, Professor Emeritus and Associate Professor of New Testament at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.
St. Paul's I Corinthians stands as one of the Bible's greatest masterpieces and certainly one of the greatest contributions to Christian theology. The epistle "To the Church which is in Corinth..." addresses itself to the basic tenets of Christian faith as well as down-to-earth matters of moral conduct and standards of Christian living, including such topics as speaking in tongues, the Resurrection, the Lord's Supper, and the problems of marriage. This letter also includes Paul's memorable definition of Christian love.
The man who laid the foundations of Christian theology remains important not only for what he taught, but for who he was.
Professors Orr and Walther ask--and answer--"What Kind of Man Was Paul?" in their own extended introductory biography of the man: a look at his life, his ministry, and his beliefs.

Description: Paul: The Man and the Myth opens the window into the humanity of the most influential apostle of the early Christian church and, in doing so, offers a fresh view of this important historical figure. In examining the apostle and his theology, Calvin J. Roetzel vividly depicts Paul's world - the land where he grew up, the language he spoke, the scriptures he studied, and the lessons he learned in letter writing and rhetoric. Roetzel presents an evangelist anxious about the welfare of his churches, a theologian facing fierce opposition, a missionary at the mercy of the elements, and a man suffering physical assault, slander, and imprisonment. In contrast to the powerful hero described in Acts and the Apocryphal Acts, Roetzel's portrayal presents a physically weak, even sickly, theologian; a letter writer; and a preacher unskilled in speech. Questioning the historicity of widely held beliefs about the apostle - including his Roman citizenship - Roetzel suggests that Paul never abandoned ties to his native Judaism or to the Hellenistic culture of his childhood. Roetzel underscores that no matter how Paul's image has changed through history, he remains forever tied to support for the weak and vulnerable, faith in one God, and the transgressing of social boundaries.
