Description: With insight and illumination from today's most acclaimed writers and scholars, the Riverhead Sacred Text Series has been especially designed to guide the modern reader through the ancient books of the Bible. This edition of the Letters of Paul includes the King James version of the Epistles, with commentary by Bishop John S. Spong. In a series of letters sharing the teachings of Jesus Christ, Paul the Apostle laid down the fundamental principles of Christianity. Spanning fourteen books of the New Testament--including Romans, Corinthians, and Hebrews--the Epistles of Paul expand upon the basic concepts of sin and faith that, throughout the ages, have helped define what it means to be a Christian. This special Riverhead edition includes the complete letters of Paul, presented here, for the first time, in the order that recent scholarly consensus has determined they were written. The commentary by Bishop John S. Spong, author of Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism, offers a fresh, modern perspective that makes the letters both inspiring and relevant for today's reader.

Review Summary: Pathetic Revisionism
Date: 2001-11-30
Details: The Epsicopal Church's main proponent of blessing homosexual unions basically justifies his view by trying to discredit or at least minimize the interpretation of Paul's writings by painting him as a self-hating, repressed homosexual. Typical agenda driven liberalism - not theology.
Review Summary: Worth a Look
Date: 2000-02-13
Details: While this book is mainly a collection of the epistles, which can be found in any New Testament, it is worth purchasing for Spong's lengthy introduction in which he presents a radical but nevertheless fascinating theory concerning the first published theologian of the Christian church. Even though Spong's theory concerning the Apostle Paul cannot be proved or disproved based on New Testament evidence alone, it can also not be dismissed out of hand based on that very same evidence.
Review Summary: Makes Paul newly relevant!
Date: 1999-09-14
Details: A refreshing way to read the first Christian author! Bishop Spong in his introduction offers challenging consideration and surprising insight into the person of Paul of Tarsus. Putting the Epistles into their probable chronological order offers further enlightenment on them.
Review Summary: Starts with a few points worth pondering, then gets lost.
Date: 1999-08-03
Details: The author takes very little time in turning what could have been an interesting book and turns it into a political, homosexual normalization diatribe.
