Description: Abusing Science is a manual for intellectual self-defense, the most complete available for presenting the case against Creationist pseudo-science. It is also a lucid exposition of the nature and methods of genuine science. The book begins with a concise introduction to evolutionary theory for non-scientists and closes with a rebuttal of the charge that this theory undermines religious and moral values. It will astonish many readers that this case must still be made in the 1980s, but since it must, Philip Kitcher makes it irresistibly and forcefully. Not long ago, a federal court struck down an Arkansas law requiring that "scientific" Creationism be taught in high school science classes. Contemporary Creationists may have lost one legal battle, but their cause continues to thrive. Their efforts are directed not only at state legislatures but at local school boards and textbook publishers. As Kitcher argues in this rigorous but highly readable book, the integrity of science is under attack. The methods of inquiry used in evolutionary biology are those which are used throughout the sciences. Moreover, modern biology is intertwined with other fields of science—physics, chemistry, astronomy, and geology. Creationists hope to persuade the public that education in science should be torn apart to make room for a literal reading of Genesis. Abusing Science refutes the popular complaint that the scientific establishment is dogmatic and intolerant, denying "academic freedom" to the unorthodox. It examines Creationist claims seriously and systematically, one by one, showing clearly just why they are at best misguided, at worst ludicrous.

Description: As recently seen by the Kitzmiller vs. Dover case, the evolution versus creation debate never goes away. The best way to understand these debates is to read the arguments of the individuals involved. This reference work provides over 40 of the most important documents to help readers understand the debate in the eyes of the people of the time. Each document is from a major participant in the debates -- from the predecessors of Darwin to the judges of the influential court cases of the present day. The editors have included an introduction and analysis of each document that places it within historical and scientific context. Evolution and Creationism: A Documentary and Reference Guide aims to enhance our understanding of the debate by presenting over 40 documents that shed light on the origins, goals, and history of the ongoing debate. The volume examines such topics as: BLDarwin's theory of natural selection, and reviews of his work from his contemporaries BLThe rise of Fundamentalism and its opposition to evolution BLFrom "Equal-Time" to the de-emphasis of evolution in the schools BLEvolution and its discontents at the beginning of the 21st century In addition, the work includes an extensive bibliography and reference guide to relevant print and electronic resources.

Description: Perhaps because of it implications for our understanding of human nature, recent philosophy of biology has seen what might be the most dramatic work in the philosophies of the ”special” sciences. This drama has centered on evolutionary theory, and in the second edition of this textbook, Elliott Sober introduces the reader to the most important issues of these developments. With a rare combination of technical sophistication and clarity of expression, Sober engages both the higher level of theory and the direct implications for such controversial issues as creationism, teleology, nature versus nurture, and sociobiology. Above all, the reader will gain from this book a firm grasp of the structure of evolutionary theory, the evidence for it, and the scope of its explanatory significance.

Description: Each of these three books (Developing a Christian Worldview of Science and Evolution, Developing a Christian Worldview of the Problem of Evil, and Developing a Christian Worldview of the Christian in Today's Culture) is drawn from Colson's highly successful How Now Shall We Live? Shorter in length and accessible to readers, the Developing a Christian Worldview series is ideal for small-group study and classroom use. Each chapter begins with pre-reading questions, and each study session is made up of newly written discussion questions, role-playing activities, and challenges to implement key insights. All are designed to help readers grasp Colson's arguments and learn how to use the points effectively with non-Christians.

Description: The Case Against Darwin is James Perloff's newest title on the creation-evolution debate. Written from a creationist perspective, this 83-page book is a primer for those unfamiliar with the subject, and too busy for a full-length book such as the author's earlier Tornado in a Junkyard. Perloff first explores the social impact of Darwinism to establish the relevance of the topic. Then, in layman's language, he discusses the growing body of evidence that is invalidating Darwin's theory of evolution: evidence from genetics, origins science, biochemistry, paleontology, taxonomy and molecular biology. Finally, he examines fallacies of certain evidences commonly said to support Darwin's theory: Ernst Haeckel's embryo drawings, vestigial organs, salt percentages in blood and seawater, babies born with "monkey tails," peppered moths, microevolution, and similarity as a proof of common descent. Despite the scientific nature of the material, Perloff keeps it light and short, and most readers should find The Case Against Darwin an easy read.

Description: Darwin's greatest accomplishment was to show how life might be explained as the result of natural selection. But does Darwin's theory mean that life was unintended? William A. Dembski argues that it does not. As the leading proponent of intelligent design, Dembski reveals a designer capable of originating the complexity and specificity found throughout the cosmos. Scientists and theologians alike will find this book of interest as it brings the question of creation firmly into the realm of scientific debate. Updated with a new Preface by the author.

Description: Can the Biblical account of creation be reconciled with current scientific beliefs? For over a century, the Holy Bible's story of creation has come under considerable scrutiny and derision by the scientific community. The length of creation days, the Biblical order of creation, and man's origin have all been the subjects of heated debates - debates that cast further doubts on Biblical accuracy. But is such derision warranted? The Theory of Creation boldly answers that very question. Rather than denounce other theories or repudiate accepted scientific beliefs, this is a comprehensive and objective analysis of the first story of the Bible (Genesis 1:1 - 2:4). Each verse is carefully examined for its scientific meaning, the original Hebrew text is often referenced, popular theories are explored, and the purpose and implications of God's actions are addressed. Finally, the Biblical account of creation is compared to the scientific record. In this era of moral relativism, when Biblical values are condemned and the sanctity of the Holy Bible is often ridiculed, validation of the creation story would be a source of inspiration for believers everywhere. In The Theory of Creation, Jim Schicatano answers the enduring questions of science and resolves the Biblical Creation debate.
