Description: Richard Dawkins, biologist and best-selling author, claims that belief in God is a "delusion" and that "religion" harms society. Dawkins contends that he has reason and evidence on his side, and he dismisses faith as unfounded, even irrational.

Dominican Thomas Crean tackles Dawkins' claims head-on. He presents straightforward arguments for God's existence, and he uses reason and evidence to defend such things as miracles and the authority of the Bible. He also shows how God is important for a coherent understanding of morality, and why Dawkins' approach winds up reducing morality to the individual's subjective likes and dislikes. By demonstrating how Dawkins' criticisms rest on misunderstandings, superficial readings, poor argumentation, a lack of historical awareness, and not a little prejudice, Crean reveals Dawkins to be out of his philosophical and theological depth, and his case against God to be fundamentally flawed.

Review Summary: An Atheist agrees... Date: 2008-10-15

Details: I read this book with interest in that I always like to take in as much information and opinion/perception as possible. Crean argues extremely well concerning Dawkins' unintelligble position of God's complexity. When I read "The God Delusion" this immediately stood out to me as the fallacy of combination: if X is such then Y is such. Suffice it to say, Dawkins' did not convince me, and I'm an Atheist. I found Dawkins' reasoning to be faulty and obviously, so did Crean. It was only a matter of time before someone pointed this out. However, just because someone can point to a fallacy in a argument means only that THAT argument (God's complexity) is unreasoned and illogical. This does not negate further arguments, better, reasoned, logical arguments against God as that too would be the fallacy of combination.

Review Summary: Dawkins' arguments are dead and buried Date: 2008-09-19

Details: This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. Fr. Crean is a fantastic and witty writer. I've learned so much from this book. His arguments and refutations of Dawkins are clear and concise. In particular, he does an excellent job of refuting materialism and exposing flaws and misunderstanding in Dawkin's writing. Although Dawkin's book doesn't even warrant a refutation, God is No Delusion delivers a shattering one.

Review Summary: Pseudo-philosophical mumbo-jumbo Date: 2008-08-27

Details: The author tries--and I emphasize the word try--to refute Richard Dawkins' attack on religious faith. While the God Delusion is far from flawless, God is no Delusion fails to counter any of its arguments. The author makes absurd claims, e.g. children are less likely than adults to believe in false things--Father Crean doesn't account for the relative adult lack of belief in Santa Claus or the tooth fairy. Crean claims that atheists will never accept any evidence for a divine being. Being an atheist, I will offer him this challenge: show me one instance in history when an amputee has his arm or leg restored through prayer to Jesus. If you can do this, I will become a devout Christian. (Or, slightly more frivously, if God strikes down Christopher Hitchens with a bolt of lightning in his next debate, I will also be convinced). Until then, I remain unconvinced of God, resurrections, holy books, and miracles, and other far-fetched claims of religious people.

There are other weaknesses in Crean's argument that I could bring up, but let's not beat a dead horse. (God is good, because, well, he must be, is one). Don't buy this book and don't take it seriously.

Review Summary: This is "ANOTHER" refutation of Dawkins Date: 2008-08-08

Details: I am giving Thomas Creen's book 4 stars, as I have yet to complete it. However, I simply wanted to make the point that this book is but "another" complete refutation of Mr Dawkin's skated logic - and an admirable one at that.

My hope is that it builds on the absolute and utter demolition of Dawkins given by the agnostic Jew, David Berlinski, in his stellar book "The Devil's Delusion" (released earlier this year). Both of these books make it quite clear that Dawkins is both intellectually lazy and quite comfortable ignoring the obvious. They also make it quite clear that Richard Dawkins is en route to his own personal satisfaction; hardly a search for the truth based on science, biology, human history, or philosophy.

Materialists are nothing new. Aa a rule, they would love for the general population to just *go along* with the idea that the evidence is on their side. In Dawkin's case, he desperately wants that evidence to be biological in nature and therefore irrefutable in his mind. As many of the more thoughtful (less dogmatic) in the sciences have repeatedly demonstrated - his longing for such evidence is a lost cause. As a simple matter of fact, the evidence shows the exact opposite. And so, a shell game ensues, along with a significant dose of intellectual hubris.

He is in a delusion of his own making.

Review Summary: God IS no delusion! Date: 2008-06-23

Details: Fr. Crean's refutation is both substantive and a pleasure to read. Crean very fairly, and GOOD-HUMOREDLY, makes quick work of what passes for the "new atheist" arguments and devotes the rest of the book's pages to outlining several very interesting Christian arguments. The book's a valuable addition to my little library and one I'll certainly reread more than a few times.
