Description: The Case Against Darwin is James Perloff's newest title on the creation-evolution debate. Written from a creationist perspective, this 83-page book is a primer for those unfamiliar with the subject, and too busy for a full-length book such as the author's earlier Tornado in a Junkyard. Perloff first explores the social impact of Darwinism to establish the relevance of the topic. Then, in layman's language, he discusses the growing body of evidence that is invalidating Darwin's theory of evolution: evidence from genetics, origins science, biochemistry, paleontology, taxonomy and molecular biology. Finally, he examines fallacies of certain evidences commonly said to support Darwin's theory: Ernst Haeckel's embryo drawings, vestigial organs, salt percentages in blood and seawater, babies born with "monkey tails," peppered moths, microevolution, and similarity as a proof of common descent. Despite the scientific nature of the material, Perloff keeps it light and short, and most readers should find The Case Against Darwin an easy read.

Review Summary: Concise And Crucial |

Details: In his work "The Case Against Darwin" James Perloff offers a concise treatment of the major themes of the current and ongoing debate between evolutionists and creationists. More specifically, Perloff points out why the theory of evolution is importation to our lives, he expounds on evidence against Darwinian evolution, and offers a critical evaluation of evidences which are commonly used to support the theory of evolution. In the following exposition I will offer a synopsis of the major themes presented in this work.
Unlike many other areas of scientific study, evolutionary thought has major social implications. World leaders, policy makers, and others in positions of influence who are ardent evolutionists bring with them into their work a worldview which is inherently at odds with Christianity in specific and religion in general. Darwin even appears to have heavily influence on the most notorious world leaders of the recent era. In regard this, Perloff (2003, p.10) states that "While Marx saw the `struggle for existence' as between classes, Hitler saw it as between races and sought to develop a master race."
Indeed, racism is woven into the evolutionary worldview as an indelible part of its framework. Innate to the theory of evolution is the idea that the supposed human "races" are evidence that each one evolved along slightly different paths which has given them different adaptations and even inferior traits.
Darwinism is, at its core, a racially prejudiced ideology. It is based not on seeing life as the wonderful creation of God, but as the product of accidental and random occurrences which created a situation where the strongest and fittest survive. In this scenario those people groups with different traits must have inferior adaptations - leading to a racist understanding of the "races" of man.
Perloff goes on to offer strong scientific evidence which disproves evolution. Indeed, it not merely dogmatic religious arguments which are made here to disprove evolution; it is shown that evolution is unsound scientifically. Perloff beats evolution on its own terms. Evolution depends heavily on the mutation - random variances in genetic code - of traits in organisms to show how evolution can occur to the extent that a fish can evolve into a man, for example.
The author shows that this argument, which is essential to evolution, is untenable since mutation does not add desirable traits to an organism; rather, mutations are by and large undesirable. Perloff writes (2003, p.23) that "Mutations delete information from the genetic code. They never create higher, more complex information. What are they actually observed to cause in human beings? Death. Sterility. Hemophilia. Sickle cell anemia. Cystic fibrosis. Down's syndrome. And over 4,000 other diseases."
The author points out that the crucial missing element of evolution is its utter inability to adequately explain the origins of life. In Darwin's day science did not understand very much at all about the cell. They believed that the cell was a rather simple, albeit important, building block of living organisms. They were partially correct in that cells are a building block present in organic life. They were horribly inaccurate in their uninformed belief that cells were simple. Science has now discovered that cells are incredibly complex.
Cells are made up of proteins which are in turn made up of amino acids. Amino acids must be aligned in very specific sequences if a protein is to function in a proper way. The notion that even one properly protein chain could have arisen by chance is highly remote to the point of near impossibility. Cells, though, are not made up of even one protein. They are comprised of hundreds of properly functioning proteins which perform very specific functions within the cell. We have already seen that adaptations do not add information to life and now we see that without the proper information a cell, which is the basic building block of life, can not function.
The author then goes on to discuss the evidence against many of the commonly propounded arguments in favor of evolution. He points out that the long held belief that human, pig, and rabbit embryos resembled one another in the womb was the product of fraudulent drawings by a German scientist named Ernst Haekel in an effort to mislead people toward an acceptance of Darwinian evolution. He shows with conclusive evidence that humans do not in fact have the same percentage of salt water in their blood system as that found in the ocean - as commonly held by some evolutionists.
The author also points out that the argument from microevolution is flawed as well. The example that is given is that of dogs which have over the centuries been breed into dogs with different characteristics and traits. As the author points out, this argument has the distinct inability to account for the lack of change in the species. This argument is flawed in that it only shows variation in kinds - it has never produced a new kind. Regardless of how much intentionality dog breeder's use in their efforts they only ever produce dogs! No dog has ever become anything other than a larger or smaller dog.
The author also tackles the evolutionary argument from common traits, i.e. tigers and humans both have two eyes, a brain, a heart, etc.
He rightly points out however that common traits speak much more to a common designer than they do to common ancestry. In the biological environment that we experience on this planet, there are many physical traits which are indeed desirable. While evolutionists assert that life has evolved these desirable traits in order to fit into its environment better, the author shows us that the complexity of these adaptations point to a common designer who used common design in order to produce a wonderful creation!
In this book James Perloff lays out a clear and concise treatise of the mounting evidence against Darwinism. While modern science and pop culture alike cling to this world view, its support in light of the evidence is waning. Still, its proponents largely refuse to even entertain the possibility that Darwin's theory is untrue. Indeed, Darwinism has become so deeply embedded into the modern mind that it is most often regarded as fact. The author makes a strong call for integrity in the scientific pursuit regardless of where the data leads even if the data takes science away from its current dogma. |

Review Summary: disappointing |

|
Details: I've read all the reviews here and I must say they all baffle me a little. There's simply not enough here to either hate or proclaim as the greatest thing since sliced bread. There's very little current religious thinking and I couldn't find any real science despite going back through it quite carefully. There are numerous valuable books on both sides of this debate, but unfortunately this isn't one of them. |

Details: This was a great book. I enjoyed the refrences as well. It is a great starting place to part the fog that clouds most people's minds. Prove what you hear and read, don't just accept it because they are "scholars" or so called "scientists". |

Review Summary: Fails at its Proclaimed Objective |

Details: Because its proclaimed objective is an impossibility.
All Perloff does is reiterate the same tired nonsensical "evidence against" the very real process of natural selection. Perloff's "arguments" have been repeatedly and summarily dismissed by the scientific community as either ignorance or willful misrepresentation of fact.
The notion that Science avoids the claims of so-called critics of evolutionary theory is both ironic and laughable given the fingers in the ears approach that "creationism" generally takes to the subject.
To call this book "logical" is to dilute the meaning of logic to the level of the superstitious pap that goes by the name of "intelligent-design". |

Review Summary: Simple and straight to the point |
Date: 2005-10-12 |
|
| |
Details: For someone who didn't know there were any arguments against Darwinism, this book is small, easy to read and to the point. It summarizes a number of important arguments against Darwinism. It is a good "starter" book and has some references to some other books that the reader can follow up with if they are interested in pursuing this topic further.
However, don't expect this book to present you with "irrefutable evidence". If you don't have an open mind about the subject, this book will probably not force it open. But if you do have an open mind, it will point out some areas of the Darwinian theory that don't stand up against serious scrutiny. And given today's scientific bias, this may surprise you and awaken a desire to understand the issues in greater depth.
Therefore, I heartily recommend it.
