Description: This book is the result of a collaborative effort on the part of a group of outstanding theologians, historians, and biblical scholars within the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature. Clarifying for themselves and others the distinctive charcter of feminist interpretation, they continue the process of liberating the word that concerns the whole church.

Description: Here is a revised edition of a landmark text by one of our most distinguished authors and theologians. In Beyond Patching, Sandra Schneiders clarifies the language and concerns of feminist spirituality and effectively addresses the excruciating tensions that have arisen because of the sometimes morally unacceptable way that women are treated in the Church. She asserts that the current half-hearted attempts to "patch" things up must be replaced with a whole-hearted renewal, or the Church stands in danger of losing touch with many of its women. Beyond Patching supports meaningful change by presenting the feminist theological agenda in a manner that does not undermine the foundations of Christian faith. It includes such fundamental theological problems as the function of scripture for women once its patriarchal and misogynist content has been identified, the spiritual struggle of women who feel alienated by the church, and Catholic feminism in relation to the larger feminist movement. Beyond Patching is an excellent tool that not only gives hope to women but serves as a warning to Church authorities: just as an old garment can be beyond repair, so, too, the Church, in this case, is beyond patching.

Description: Challenging the conservative framers of Islamic law who accorded a lesser status to women, Mohammad Ali Syed argues that the Quran and the Hadith-the two primary sources of Islamic law-actually place Muslim women on the same level as Muslim men. Syed provides an overview of both sources and explores their respective roles in Islamic law, emphasizing the Quran's role as the supreme authority and questioning the authenticity of some of the alleged sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). From these texts, he elaborates women's rights in a variety of areas, including treatment by God; marriage, divorce, financial provisions, and custody of children; coming out of seclusion (purdah), and taking part in social, economic, legal, and political activities. Rather than presenting what is practiced today, the book covers the theoretical position of Muslim women as sanctioned by the Quran and the authentic Hadith and offers a glimpse of the exalted position of honor and dignity enjoyed by Muslim women in the early days of Islam. This well-researched book is made more distinctive by the author's personal experience. Raised in Bengal, India, Syed was inspired by his family, who valued men and women equally. As he grew up, Syed realized that most Muslim women lived very differently than the women of his family. According to the author, his family was egalitarian because his father and male relatives were not only devout Muslims but also very knowledgeable about Islam. This book is a culmination of his lifelong concern for women's rights under Islam.

Description: Lanzetta illuminates the transformative potential of the classical tradition of women mystics, especially in light of contemporary violence against women around the world. Focusing on the contemplative process as women’s journey from oppression to liberation, Lanzetta draws especially on the mysticism of Julian of Norwich and Teresa of Avila. She lays out the contemplative techniques used by mystics to achieve their highest spiritual potential and also investigates how unjust social and political conditions afflict women’s souls. Lanzetta identifies a specific historical female mystical path (the via feminina) and draws contemporary conclusions for how women might understand their bodies, their rights, and their ethics.
