Description: #1 Essence bestselling author Renita J. Weems draws upon the Book of Luke, examining the relationship between Mary and her older cousin to reveal the life-changing effect mentoring has on the lives of women. The story of a young pregnant Mary visiting her older pregnant cousin Elizabeth, told in Luke 1:39-56, is one of the most profound examples in the Bible of an empowered mentoring relationship between women. Drawing upon the Hail Mary and The Magnificat prayers, SHOWINGMARY retells this touching story, revealing how both mentor and protg use their respective gifts and energies to support each other. This relationship is then applied to modern life, emphasizing the importance of women mentoring women, nurturing each other's dreams, sharing wisdom and experiences, and building networks of mutually rewarding friendships between older and younger women.

Review Summary: Encouraging lives of Biblical Matriachs Shine in Showing Mary |
Date: 2008-08-01 |

Details: At the suggestion of author, Dr. Renita Weems, (yes, she's just that accessible to readers), our Bible study group based in the Middle East selected Showing Mary. Although Weems assumes a womanist approach usually geared towards an African American female audience, our Christian women's study group was diverse ethnically, racially, linguistically, in country of origin, and age found the text inclusionary that speaks to the experience of all women.
Most importantly, we LOVED this paradigm-changing and thought-provoking book. Indeed, you realize that although Weems is a renowned Biblical scholar with the revelations she presented, you also find the book very accessible to all readers at varying levels in their walk with Christ.
Nearing the end of the book and group study, I felt like I was saying goodbye to an old friend (an Elizabeth) who had shown me ways to be encouraged and to encourage others through life's journey. GREAT READ---YOU'LL LOVE IT. Praise God for the gifts He's given Renita and to all of us. |

Review Summary: To the "Mary" (and "Elizabeth") In You.... |

Details: Rev. Weems has written wonderfully, and expressed simply, the impact women have on the lives of other women. At any given moment, we may be either "Mary" or "Elizabeth." I found my chapter(s) and rejoiced with each page that God had brought women (elders and lil' sisters) into my life to teach me and be taught by me. I recommend "Showing Mary" to every woman--regardless of your ethnicity, denomination or generation; but ESPECIALLY those who may have thought you "missed the boat," or were "sailing alone." Thank you, Renita, and thank you "Elizabeth" for sharing this treasure with me. With much love...."Mary" |
