Description: Denying that Christ suffered and died is like denying the Holocaust. For some it is simply too horrific to affirm. Others suspect it is an elaborate religious conspiracy to coerce sympathy. Those who deny either event live in a historical dreamworld. Jesus suffered unspeakably and died. The Passion of Jesus Christ shows that the gore of Christ's suffering is turned to glory by the enormity and diversity of what his death achieved. To do this, John Piper uncovers fifty accomplishments of Christ's suffering. He shuns embellishment and shows from the Bible key evidence for each outcome of Christ's death. When it is all said and done, the most crucial question is: Why? Why did Christ suffer and die? The answer has everything to do with you.

Review Summary: Jesus' passion and purpose |
Date: 2008-11-07 |
|
| |
Details: As the back-of-the-cover blurp says: "Fifty reasons why Jesus came to die." I read it straight through on the plane home from the Gladstone Family Camp week in 2004, and that was just a surface-scratcher. This book needs study with the Bible open beside it.
One thing I think is just a bit disappointing is that it is really written for the person who is already a Christian, because it uses a lot of words and concepts that an unsaved person who has not read the Bible or been in a fundamental church will stumble over. This would probably not be an effective evangelization tool.
But for the Christian who needs to study and be reminded of his Saviour's passion and purpose, and our passion and purpose in light of it, it is worthy of the highest rating. |

Review Summary: Why did Jesus come to walk on this earth thirty years, suffer, die and The Resurrection? |
Date: 2008-10-25 |

|
Details: Why did Jesus come to earth to live among sinners, to suffer the weakness of sinners yet no sin? This book defines the reason why Jesus was born a human being. Why the Nativity? A book written by David Jeremiah had a stated purpose in its title why Jesus came to earth as an infant baby. That book I found lacking in a comprehensive theological theme. This book titled the Passion of Jesus Christ contains the Gospel, the Good News. Written in short devotional style has substance, contains 50 two page chapters meant to be read individually on fifty distinct occasions. Meaning to read, contemplate and digest. One who tries to read this book in hour and a half will lose the flavor and comprehension of this work. Why does God have wrath toward us sinners? Why did Jesus have to experience earthly existence for thirty years before he started his ministry years? How is the resurrection of Jesus an individual's accomplishment while others were through the power of God? How did the death and resurrection cancel the legal demands of our sins? How did it pay a ransom? What is Justification? What is redemption? What is forgiveness of sins? What is to complete obedience? What does it mean to take away one's condemnation? What does it mean to reconcile a sinner to God? This book defines terms and makes clear the distinction of the terms. This movie may have been promoted as sort of a product tie-in to Mel Gibson's movie title the Passion, but to understand does not demand familiarity with the movie. This book may be a little overwhelming to one has not accepted Jesus as God and Savior. I highly recommend this book. |

Review Summary: Heaven...And so much more |
Date: 2008-09-03 |

Details: The Passion of Jesus Christ: Fifty Reasons Why He Came to Die by John Piper is not a lengthy book but after diving into it I began to realize that it is a meal best consumed slowly and thoughtfully.
If you are like me, you grew up hearing that Jesus came to suffer and die for our sins "so that we can go to heaven."
While that is not untrue, it is only only one facet of a great deal more truth about what Christ's death accomplished in His eternal plan for mankind. Piper lays out these truths with care, showcasing a feast of blessings that have been provided to us.
The layout of the book lends itself well to a devotional style, with each one of the fifty reasons comprising a two-page segment, beginning with a verse or two and then launching into Piper's explanation.
If you've never thought about how Christ's death relates to areas such as racism, the meaning of marriage, or the futility of our ancestry then I would encourage you to pick this book up and give it a try. Chew slowly. |

Review Summary: The Gospel is bigger than you think! |
Date: 2008-08-28 |

|
Details: As an evangelical Christian, I grew up knowing the gospel from church, Sunday School, and family. But John Piper's book has taught me how much bigger the gospel is than what I originally learned. Piper shows how the Gospel affects every area of the Christian's life. The Gospel is far more than "Jesus died for my sins." |

Review Summary: Good witnessing tool, good for Christians too |

Details: Whether you're a new Christian, an old Christian, a "seeker," or just curious about Christianity, this is a good book to read. In particular, if you saw Mel Gibson's "Passion of the Christ," this book is a good companion. As other reviewers have mentioned, the movie shows THAT Jesus suffered, this book explains WHY He suffered and what it accomplished. Too often Jesus is viewed as a good moral teacher but little else; this book shows that Jesus is much more significant than that.
This book is great for witnessing. I have personally used it in evangelism and would recommend giving it to your non-Christian friends. It's great for you too; even if you think you already know why Jesus died, it'll still be beneficial. It will give you reasons for Jesus' death that you never thought of and it will help you stay focused on what Jesus did for you. This is a great book to read around Good Friday (or any other time, for that matter).
What Christ accomplished for us is obviously critically important for the Christian, and this book will help you understand that better. Dr. Piper job avoids getting bogged down in jargon or technicalities and writes in a way that laymen, including those with little theological training and non-Christians, can easily understand. It is also very concise, so you can read it fairly quickly. It is also structured such that each point is exactly 2 pages, which makes it good for devotional reading. I highly recommend this book. |
