Review Summary: If that's blasphemy, count me in! |

Details: I wish to be respectful to the reviewer below but perhaps that is why we need a book like this. (Perhaps he has done this book a great service! ;-) ) Pejorative, emotive terms such as "blasphemous" and "nonsense" do little to promote civil dialogue and discourse and just add to the polarization between Christians of differing theological perspectives.
Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer has valiantly written much about violence in the Bible. See his "Jesus Against Christianity" and "Is Religion Killing Us? Violence in the Bible And the Quran". His viewpoint is not just some whacko, leftist knee-jerk response to traditional Christian dogma but the earnest wrestling of one who wants the Christian God to be seen as absolute, consistent Love. One can easily become schizophrenic reading Biblical passages that promote love, non-violence and love of enemies contrasted with passages of sacred violence and judgment. Strategies of dealing with this are varied and I believe we need to permit all who have struggled with the issue to speak their mind. Sadly, most Christians just seem to "repress" this issue without thinking it through and taking a stand where their conscience takes them.
For those who may get hung up on a statement here and there in the book, perhaps the best approach is to throw out the "bones" and enjoy the feast. Besides, how many theological books has anybody critically read that one agrees with from cover to cover?
THE FEAST: I very much appreciate the creative efforts of the two contributors in this book. Whether one is conservative or liberal, shouldn't the church's worshipful focus be on the inclusive love of God that has been so extravagantly lavished upon us through Christ? Paul's letters frequently called his established churches to comprehend this most wondrous truth so that discord and conflict (types of violence/anti-love) within the church could be seen as tragically living outside that nurturing reality and repented of.
The church is the place to put to an end the myriad types of violence that are found rampant in an often brutal world. This resource of non-violent, inclusive worship is a fresh and creative attempt to focus on those realities of faith that can most potently transform us to live out this new identity and purpose.
Practically speaking, and why many should buy the book, this is simply a well thought out, creative liturgy that could be a catalyst to renew a vibrant, inclusive sense of worship for small groups or local churches. The accompanying CD and book give a wealth of songs, prayers and themes that will provide focus on God's peaceable kingdom. And sure, just use a song and prayer here and there to add to your own distinctive worship service if that's all you are looking for. (Also see: "For Praying Out Loud: Interfaith Prayers for Public Occasions", "More Than Words: Prayer and Ritual for Inclusive Communities", and "Fragments of Real Presence: Liturgical Traditions in the Hands of Woman" for additional inspiration.) |
