Description: Commissioned in 1993, this new translation of The Book of Concord brings a new generation of scholarship and sensitivities to bear on the foundational texts of Lutheran identity. The fifth English translation since 1851, this edition succeeds that edited by Theodore Tappert published in 1959 by Muhlenburg Press. A review of the text in light of a mountain of new scholarship and other factors dictated the new translation and apparatus, including changes in the English language over the past forty years, differences in the training and preparation of seminarians and pastors, limitations in the introductions and annotations to the various parts of the book, new knowledge of the history and theology of these very documents, and the occasional error in Tappert's translation. Kolb and Wengert's team of leading Reformation historians was augmented by consultation with one hundred other scholars and teachers who use The Book of Concord continually, and two other teams of scholars who have reviewed the translations. In coming years, two volumes of related documents will follow. Benefits of this new translation: Expanded introductions and annotations offer richer historical context New translation aims at accessible but accurate translation Format is easier to read and use Leading American scholars have been involved or consulted

Description: What is an intellectual? How can we learn to think well? What does it mean to love God with our minds? Can Christians legitimately aspire to becoming intellectuals? And can intellectual life indeed be a Christian calling for some - if not for all? James Sire puts his supple mind to these questions and offers an unusual insider's view of learning to think well for the glory of God and for the sake of his kingdom. In particular he shows us how to cultivate "habits of the mind" that will strengthen us in the pursuit of our goal. Because Jesus was the smartest man who ever lived, he argues, we can and should accept the challenge to think as well as we can. "Few contemporary evangelical writers have so profitably explored the meaning and implications of the Christian worldview and mind as Jim Sire. Now his wise, well-informed and witty work Habits of the Mind puts us even further in his debt." Douglas Groothuis, Associate Professor of Philosophy, Denver Seminary, and author of Truth Decay (IVP) "This may be Dr. Sire's best book yet! He has introduced us to many fellow travelers on the road to wisdom who are great discoveries in themselves. He helpfully points us to all the important links--mind and heart, passion for holiness and passion for truth--links that should be indissoluble, but alas are not." Terry Morrison, Director Faculty Ministries, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship "Over the last twenty-five years, no one has written so widely and helpfully about the challenge facing Christian students as James Sire. Page upon page, year after year, he has set before a generation the meaning of the Christian faith--intellectually rich and profoundly true. Now in Habits of the Mind one hears countless conversations and a lifetime of listening in this call to love what we believe, to live the truth even as we learn to probe and ponder it." Steven Garber, Scholar-in-Residence, Council for Christian Colleges and Universities

Description: Pete Greig, the acclaimed author of Red Moon Rising, has written his most intensely personal and honest account yet in God on Mute, a book born out of his wife Samie s fight for her life and diagnosis of a debilitating brain tumor. Greig asks the timeless questions of what it means to suffer and to pray and to suffer through the silence because your prayers seem unanswered. This silence, Greig relates, is the hardest thing. The world collapses. Then all goes quiet. Words can t explain, don t fit, won t work. People avoid you and don t know what to say. So you turn to Him and you pray. You need Him more than ever before. But somehow...even God Himself seems on mute. In this heart-searching, honest and deeply profound book, Pete Greig looks at the hard side of prayer, how to respond when there seem to be no answers and how to cope with those who seek to interpret our experience for us. Here is a story of faith, hope and love beyond all understanding.
