Description: North America's cities may be crowded and tumultuous places of steel and glass, but there is scarcely one of them that does not have some quiet forested corner, some green place of solace and repose. Arthur Plotnik, the author of the fine writer's handbook The Elements of Editing, celebrates such places in The Urban Tree Book, an information-rich, entertaining guide to the trees you are likely to encounter in places such as Toronto, Washington, Vancouver, and Kansas City. (For residents of cities farther south and west, he includes a section on palm trees.) A late bloomer--he writes that he came to an appreciation of city greenery not as a naturalist, but as a writer given to staring out his window at a cluster of silver maple, ash, and horse chestnut trees--Plotnik has mastered a wide variety of materials. He describes not only the ranges, biology, and life histories of some 50 common urban trees, but also gathers oddments of folklore and nicely appropriate bits of urban history, such as, for instance, the fact that Al Capone favored an ash bat "to keep his goons in line." As Plotnik observes, at the dawn of the 21st century, 75 percent of all North Americans live in cities. In his pages these urbanites will find a wealth of information to help better acquaint themselves with the natural life that perseveres in their midst. --Gregory McNamee

Description: Five million acres of unprotected roadless forest remain in Oregon, stretching from the rain-drenched shores of the Pacific and Coast range, across the snow-covered Cascades to the Blue Mountains, Wallowas, and Hells Canyon; from the Deschutes, John Day, Malheur, Klamath, Umpqua, Siskiyou and Rogue basins to the ponderosa pine forests of the Ochoco, Winema, and Fremont. These roadless public forests shelter ancient trees, protect our cleanest drinking water, and provide vital habitat for fish and wildlife, including many of the Pacific Northwest’s last healthy runs of wild salmon, steelhead, and trout, and numerous species of rare and imperiled flora and fauna. Their awe-inspiring landscapes provide stunning views, quiet inspiration, and outstanding recreational opportunities. Only a small fraction of Oregon’s forests remain intact. In Oregon Wild: Endangered Forest Wilderness, noted nature writer and conservation advocate Andy Kerr describes these wild forests, with 40 maps based on new research, 199 stunning color photographs, and a foreword by Kathleen Dean Moore. The book is both a guide and a celebration; it will be treasured by hikers and nature lovers in Oregon and beyond. Andy Kerr is also the author of Oregon Desert Guide: 70 Hikes (The Mountaineers, 2000). The Oregon Natural Resources Council’s Oregon Wild campaign marks the 30th anniversary of the grassroots organization founded in 1974 to "aggressively protect and restore Oregon’s wildlands, wildlife, and waters as an enduring legacy." ONRC has been instrumental in securing permanent legislative protection for some of Oregon’s most precious landscapes and for roadless areas across the country.

Description: Learn to identify native trees by their leaves and needles in the Rocky Mountain region. Like other pocket guides from Nature Study Guild Publishers' Finder series, this book is organized as a dichotomous key. The key leads you step-by-step through a series of simple questions to arrive at the name of the tree. Area covered extends across the mountain West, from the Canadian Rockies on the north to the mountains of New Mexico and Arizona on the south, and across the Rockies and Great Basin, from the Black Hills on the east, to the eastern slopes of the Cascades on the west. New in the 2008 second edition: Scientific names updated. Range maps extended to include the Canadian Rockies. Metric measurements added.
