Description: This is the opening volume in a revised series which will collectively form the second edition of the Anatomy of the Dicotyledons, originally published in 1950. Incorporating years of advances in the field, this new edition necessarily provides a more extensive presentation. Volumes 1 and 2 introduce the general principles and types of data on which the systematic anatomy of the Dicotyledons is based, and show how the discovery and organization of histological characters of vegetative organs can serve as an important element in the general taxonomic classification. The work is the result of support and contributions from botanists in both the United Kingdom and the United States. In subsequent volumes, the histological characters of the individual families will be described in the taxonomic sequence of Takhtajan's system. The first two volumes, however, serve as a textbook of systematic anatomy. No other comprehensive work on this topic exits at present. Volume 1 begins with a historical introduction, then goes on to deal with the leaf and with herbaceous stems as well as with twigs of woody plants. It also includes lists of families in which certain diagnostic features occur, along with an extensive bibliography. Secondary xylem is treated mainly in Volume 2.

Description: Here is the newest volume in a series that reviews recent progress in plant molecular and cell biology. Each volume contains ten to twelve papers on topics in the areas of molecular genetics, biochemical and cell genetics, plant micro-organism interactions and cell biology. The reviews concentrate on areas of rapid development-- particularly where modern techniques are allowing new insights to be gained. All the contributions to this volume have been written within the last year.

Description: Today's plant biologists are increasingly using the root hair as a model for investigating cell and molecular biology. This book focuses on the four major aspects of those investigations - cell biology, physiology, genetics, and symbiosis - with detailed explanations of concomitant techniques. The first part of the book deals with cell biology and includes such topics as the role of microtubules, filamentous actin, and small molecules. The middle section covers the role of hormones, electrobiology, calcium, pH, and nutrient uptake. The final chapters encompass cell biology, physiology, and genetics and provide explanations of recent advances in symbiosis with rhizobia, mycorrhizae, and Frankia. This compilation of the most up-to-date information on root hair biology by experts in the field is a valuable source for researchers from introductory to advanced levels.
