Description: This volume collects a number of essays and articles from experts in various fields connected to marine environmental issues. These essays were first presented at the XXVIII Pacem in Maribus Conference held in December 2000, at the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea in Hamburg, Germany. The purpose of the Conference was to enhance awareness of the European public, governments, the private sector and academia about the importance of responsible ocean and coastal management based on ocean science. Reflecting the innovative interdisciplinary approach of the conference, these volume groups contributors from leading biologists, political scientists, geographers, and jurists according to specific regional relevance and not along strict disciplinary lines. This approach allows the experts to treat marine issues concerning regions such as the North Sea, the Baltic Sea, or the Black Sea in a comprehensive manner.

Description: The carbon dioxide absorption and gas exchange at the sea surface, marine aerosols and their photochemistry, the oceanic carbon cycle as well as biomarkers in marine ecosystems, and related topics are of primary importance for understanding our global ecosystem. The topics addressed in this volume are all stemming from areas which have developed only in the last ten years of research or which have gone into decidedly new directions in that time. In most cases, the recent research has been driven by advances in instrumentation or by large-scale international cooperations. Thus this volume is also aiming at interdisciplinary and international cooperations in the future.

Description: The Black Sea ecosystem is a unique marine environment. Its isolation from the ocean and large catchment basin, covering industrial and rural parts of the European and Asian continents, render the Black Sea ecosystem extremely vulnerable to the imposed environmental burdens Complex scientific problems related to the recent evolution of the Black Sea ecosystem were tackled in the framework of the NATO TU BLACK SEA project `Ecosystem modelling as a management tool for the Black Sea', implemented between 1993 and 1997. The primary results and the products of the TU BLACK SEA project were presented to the scientific community at a dedicated symposium held on 15-19 June, 1997 at Zori Rossii on the Crimean coast of the Black Sea. The present two volumes contain 47 of the papers presented at the symposium, selected by peer review. Volume I contains 27 papers in all, two on the NATO TU Black SEA database and database management system, eight on the Black Sea biogeochemistry, and 17 on the biological structure of the basin. Of the 20 papers appearing in Volume II, nine are physical processes and 11 are on the modelling of the circulation and the ecosystems of the Black Sea.

Description: The most respected reference in the field--and a fascinating tour of the world's largest underwater greenhouse . . . MARINE BOTANY Second Edition Unmatched in detail and breadth, this Second Edition of Marine Botany explores the startling diversity and environmental dynamics of the hundreds of micro- and macroalgae, seagrasses, mangroves, and salt marshes as well as phytoplankton (minute, free-floating photosynthetic plants) and benthic communities (attached plants) that comprise the flourishing botanical garden submerged in and around the surface of our vast oceans. Reflecting the latest in research since the original 1981 edition, long considered the classic reference on marine plant life, this new edition's enhanced ecological perspective details the ongoing environmental challenges endured by these fragile life-forms. Viewing the structure and function of marine plant communities in the context of abiotic (light, temperature, water movement, nutrients), biotic (photosynthesis, carbon fixation, competition, predation, symbiosis), and anthropogenic influences, the book moves layer by layer through the ocean, capturing their photosynthetic and adaptive mechanisms. Pollution in the form of oil spills, heavy and radioactive metals, biological damage wrought from harvesting and aquaculture, and the harmful effects of ozone depletion and UV-B rays are detailed, along with the impact of environmental factors on morphological and anatomical adaptations. The book also describes the anthropogenic stresses endured by salt marshes, mangals, seagrass communities, and marine plants of coral reefs, concluding with possible management and restorative techniques. Marine Botany, Second Edition is both a vivid global map and comprehensive guide to all of the flourishing forms of plant life at our oceans' surface, shores, and depths and the dynamics of their survival.
