Description: The future is uncertain for the world's large marine ecosystems. These relatively narrow ocean zones, which produce nearly 95% of useable marine biomass, are becoming increasingly stressed both by natural and anthropogenic changes. The potential for consequent negative effects on global ecologies and economies has aroused major international concern. This new volume is a state-of-the-art update on large marine ecosystems, representing a multidisciplinary effort to develop a more holistic approach to the research, monitoring and mangaement of marine resources.

Description: Derived from an unprecedented research effort covering over 31 years in a series of studies of 7 major river-estuaries, Eutrophication Processes in Coastal Systems presents a comprehensive and current review of the nature of the eutrophication process and how short- and long-term nutrient loading affects marine systems. This unique book is the culmination of the most advanced research to date on how coastal systems work. Based on an 11 year interdisciplinary study of the Perdido Bay System, Dr. Robert J. Livingston's groundbreaking work offers evidence for significant findings such as: · Nutrient concentration gradients in fresh water as it entered the bay were stimulatory to phytoplankton blooms · Species that showed distinctive seasonal and interannual successions dominated plankton blooms · High relative dominance of bloom species was associated with significant reduction of phytoplankton species richness and diversity · The blooms were associated with major reductions of infaunal and epibenthic macroinvertibrates, forcing a serious disruption of the food webs and losses of secondary production Eutrophication Processes in Coastal Ecosystems goes beyond its innovative analyses of how estuarine and coastal systems have responded to fundamental alterations of the eutrophication process. Dr. Livingston's book presents the case that bloom impacts must be reviewed against the background conditions that include periodic changes brought on by drought and anthropogenous dredging. It points to the critical need for further study of phytoplankton communities and the connection between plankton blooms, sediment deterioration, and low secondary production.

Description: Students of marine biology have long been fascinated by the superorganisms called coral reefs, formed over thousands of years from skeletal remains and other matter. Many of those students have warned for several decades that these uncommon reefs are endangered by human development. Now, historian of science Jan Sapp writes, they are faced with another, paradoxical threat: the accelerating destruction of reefs by a creature called Acanthaster planci, the crown-of-thorns starfish. These starfish were a rarity when they were first observed off the coast of Australia in the late 1950s. Since that time their population has blossomed, with some scientists debating the cause but linking it at one time or another to familiar troublemakers, including global warming, overfishing, pesticide use, and atomic testing. Still other reputable scientists, Sapp writes, have dismissed the crown-of-thorns controversy as a hoax, claiming that most coral reefs are in no danger. "Facts, theories, values, and politics were so entangled in the controversy that it was often as difficult for us to separate them as it was for scientists to separate anthropogenic from natural change," he notes. Among the points in the debate that he finds most interesting is this: What happens when a natural predator threatens an already endangered species or habitat? The answers that he suggests are far from definitive, but they open up a discussion that will become increasingly important as more and more ecosystems require protection. --Gregory McNamee

Description: From the Publisher
From a certain point in outer space, above the pacific Ocean, the Earth appears entirely blue. It is the presence of liquid water in such vast quantities that marks the planet out from its neighbors in the solar system. The oceans spawned the earliest life forms, and they continue to sustain all terrestrial creatures - mankind included. And not simply through the water cycle; the oceans also play a vital role in regulating the Earth's temperature; without them, the planet would be inhospitably hot by day and cold by night.

Description: This timely volume examines the work of the National Estuary Program, the prominent federally-funded initiative dealing with pollution and other anthropogenic impacts on estuarine ecosystems and the management plans necessary to ensure that these invaluable natural treasures remain healthy and productive for future generations. Estuary Restoration and Maintenance sets into clear perspective the state of America's estuarine waters, the effects of human development in watersheds, and the impacts of pollution and anthropogenic activities on living resources and habitats in these critically important coastal systems. Effective management and protection of estuarine environments Edited by a leading estuarine scientist, the book focuses on the technical and management issues involved in National Estuary Program sites across the United States-Long Island Sound, Delaware Bay, Galveston Bay, and San Francisco Bay. Each case study explains and assesses the following critical issues: -a historical description of the priority problems -status and trends of water quality, habitat conditions, natural resources and the uses of the estuary -human impacts on water quality and habitats, natural resources and the uses of the estuary -the links between pollutant loadings and watershed development, natural resources and the uses of the estuary -the identification of priority problems and their cause and effect, -management plans to ensure ecological integrity of the estuary Estuary Restoration and Maintenance covers the gamut of issues, from the technical assessment of problems to management action plans for the improvement of the environmental quality of estuaries. Description: This is the first in the Reef Notes series, featuring articles from Julian's column in FAMA magazine from 1988-1990. The author revises the points where his opinion has changed or where he simply was in error, offering a chance for the reader to see how the understanding of how to operate a reef aquarium has evolved. A handy index allows the reader to look up various subjects.
