Description: The purpose of this book is to provide an organized compilation of information and techniques for all aspects of the biology and management of the Acanthaster planci species. This extraordinary coral predator has greater effects on coral reef communities than any other animal species. It can cause mortality of hard corals over large areas and have indirect effects that extend through the trophic levels of the reef community. This volume features A planci as an animal with a unique combination of morphological, physiological, and life history characteristics that contribute to its potential for major ecological impacts. It provides detailed techniques for disparate aspects of research and management (e.g., raising the animal through all life history stages, calculating growth curves, and treating victims of spinings). Chapters cover methods for surveys, tagging, and control of A. planci, in addition to an assessment of the advantages and disadvantages of each method. The extensive subject index includes more than 1,000 references to A. planci and a BASIC program for estimating coral recovery after predation by the starfish. Acanthaster planci: Major Management Problem of Coral Reefs is an essential reference for all coral reef managers and researchers.

Description: The book brings the attention of marine ecologists, oceanographers and marine engineers to how ocean waters interact with, influence and constrain life in the ocean. The physical processes are made intelligible to biologists with a modicum of mathematics and the nature of life in the sea is presented in an understandable manner for oceanographers and engineers. In Part I of the book, classical fluid mechanics such as laminar and turbulent flow, boundary layers, and forces induced by flow are examined. Part II deals with large-scale flows, such as waves, large ocean currents, and tides, which are beyond the scope of classic fluid mechanics. In Part III, the link between hydrodynamics of ocean flows and marine ecology is demonstrated by examples of selected, well-established phenomena and processes. The CD-ROM contains 12 ready to use computer programs on the calculation, representation and simulation of various processes.

Description: This multidisciplinary volume comprehensively reviews our current knowledge of the effects of urban, industrial and agricultural pollution on the biology of shallow coastal marine lagoons. All the authors are internationally recognized authorities and have had many years of experience in their respective fields. The major strength of this volume is that it integrates several fields of research including biogeochemistry, marine microbiology, marine algology and marine zoology. By adopting such a strategy the reader is provided with a clear insight of the key processes involved in lagoon eutrophication and dystrophy and their impact on the different biological communities which live in such environments. This book will therefore provide an essential reference work for environmental biologists, ecologists, microbiologists and those involved in the management and commercial exploitation of these economically important ecosystems.

Description: This volume on the ecology of Mauritanian coastal waters and in particular the Banc d'Arguin, allows us to understand the functioning of this remarkable coastal wetland. Major questions concern the interaction between the Banc d'Arguin ecosystem on the one hand and the adjoining systems of the open ocean with its intensive upwelling phenomena and the Sahara desert on the other. Is the Banc d'Arguin ecosystem relatively isolated from its surroundings and does it function as a tropical pocket in a more temperate surrounding, as suggested by Sevrin-Reyssac (1983); or does it interact with both the Sahara and the Atlantic Ocean? At the Banc d'Arguin, the area between the estuarine parts and the open ocean is extremely shallow and largely uncharted. Large research vessels cannot penetrate the shallows, whereas small vessels are often unable to negotiate the outer part of the shallow area due to rough weather conditions. Hence, separate teams report on work at the seaward side of this shallow sill and at the landward side. In addition, other teams address different questions, such as the productivity of the seagrass beds and the benthic fauna, the number of birds spending the summer at the Banc d'Arguin, and the distribution of several taxonomic groups of flora and fauna.

Description: This monograph on marine biodiversity is a result of 132 experts comprehensively and systematically researching and compiling the species recorded in China's seas in the last 70 years. From bacteria to mammals, over 20,000 species were verified. Each species entry includes the scientific name, author(s), distribution, and reference(s). The index includes all the taxonomic levels. In this translated English edition, revisions were made throughout the book. Hirudinea was added, and Bryozoa, Entoprocta, and Echinoderm listings were completely revised. The distribution range for each species was generally arranged from north to south and from east to west to help readers who are not familiar with China's geography. Several maps were produced for this translated edition to further aid in finding localities for the species. This book can be used for research, management, and teaching of marine biological resources. It can also be used as a reference for marine and environmental scientists and translators.
