Description: Between 850 and 859 (Christian Era), the Muslim government of Córdoba ordered the execution of forty-eight Christians. With few exceptions, these Christians invited execution by committing capital offenses: some appeared before the Muslim authorities to denounce Mohammed; others, Christian children of mixed Islamic-Christian marriages, publicly proclaimed their Christianity. Coope investigates the origins of this “martyrs’ movement” in Córdoba, then flourishing as a center of Islamic culture. She cites the fears of radical Christians that conversions to Islam were on the increase and that still more Christians were being assimilated into Arab Muslim culture. These fears were well-founded, and the executions further divided Cordovan Christians: some believed the executed to be martyrs, others argued that these were not martyrs but fanatics and troublemakers. For their part, the Muslim authorities, disposed to be tolerant, would have preferred sectarian peace; the martyrs were given every opportunity to recant. Using Christian sources (particularly the hagiographies of St. Eulogius) and Arabic accounts to understand the complex tensions in Muslim Spain between and among the Muslim majority and Christian minority, Coope presents a valuable and fresh view of this society at the apogee of al-Andalus, Muslim Spain.

Description: An intriguing, witty calendrical listing of the saints’ “Heavenly Birthdays”—which coincide with our earthly ones.
Everyone knows that February 14 is Valentine’s Day—or the Feast of Saint Valentine, the Patron Saint of lovers—but in fact, every day of the year is the Feast (or “heavenly birthday”) of not just one but many Saints. The Saint-a-Day Guide is a humorous, accurate listing of each Saint’s particular “Patronage”: his or her divinely assigned, eternal interest in such earthly matters as jobs, hobbies, romances, medical problems, neuroses, and lifestyles.
All of us, Catholic or not, need to know that there is someone looking out for us. So you will be pleased to meet Saint Germaine Cousine, Patron Saint of unattractive people; Saint Fiacre, who helps hemorrhoid sufferers; and Saint Eugene de Mazenod, the Patron of dysfunctional families. And don’t forget Saint Christina the Astonishing, who watches over psychiatrists. The Saint-a-Day Guide also discloses your other birthday—the annual Feast of your Name Saint, on which you are entitled to throw yourself a huge party and no one can ask your age. Profusely illustrated with fine art, kitsch, icons, photographs, movie stills, and drawings, The Saint-a-Day Guide provides spiritual comfort and diversion for both the faithful and the faithless.

Description: Theodore, Archbishop of Canterbury (668SH90), shaped the English Church into a structure it has retained for a millennium. Yet until recently he has remained a shadowy figure, whose early career in the Near East and at Rome has been unknown. In this book, which builds on the 1994 publication of previously unprinted Biblical commentaries from Theodore's Canterbury school, internationally distinguished scholars provide a fresh account of the career and writings of a unique personality who brought to Anglo-Saxon England the cultural heritage of Syria, Byzantium and Rome.

Description: A Drama of Reform is the story of the new order founded by Fr. Benedict Groeschel and seven other Capuchin friars, and of the first two decades of a reform in religious life begun in 1987. United in the desire to be authentic disciples of Jesus Christ and following in the footsteps of Saint Francis, they want to encourage the army of Christians of all denominations who are discouraged by the erosion of Gospel values in our culture. This inspirational volume combines more than 100 dramatic photos from the interesting and varied aspects of their daily lives. Along with the wonderful photos, members of the two independent communities of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal and Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal provide short essays on their life, which will enable others to experience the earnestness and enthusiasm of this young and fervent group. More than one hundred sisters and friars from a dozen countries have come together with the common desire to follow the Gospel of Jesus Christ after the example of Saint Francis and the tradition of the Capuchin reform. Well-known for their work with the poor and homeless in the South Bronx and other deprived areas, these Franciscans communicate a deep sense of the joy and love of those trying to be totally committed to living the Gospel in an increasingly de-Christianized world.
