Description: In this completely revised edition of the Atlas the geological evolution of Europe is discussed in a broad plate tectonic framework on the basis of 26 palaeogeographic maps (late Silurian to Mid-Pliocene) supported by 9 tectonic and geological maps, 7 isopach maps and 9 stratigraphic correlation charts. The Atlas is based on data gathered by the Shell Group of Companies, in the course of their exploration efforts in the onshore and offshore sedimentary basins of Western and Central Europe, and on published literature. Far from being a reprint of the original Atlas published in 1982, this new edition contains 56 enclosures compared with 40 in the first edition. The text has been completely rewritten and the number of text figures has increased from 29 to 100. Peter Ziegler has taken the opportunity to summarize in the new edition his studies on the evolution of the Arctic-North Atlantic rift system, the Western Tethys and Laurussia, in an effort to place the geoloigical evolution of Western and Central Europe in a global-tectonic framework. The Atlas offers superb value for money at under £50 which was the same price as the first edition, which sold over 4000 copies, back in 1982.

Description: In recent years dinosaurs have captured the attention of the public at an unprecedented level. At the heart of this resurgence in popular interest is an increased level of research activity, much of which is innovative in the field of paleontology. For instance, whereas earlier paleontological studies emphasized basic morphologic description and taxonomic classification, modern studies attempt to examine the role and nature of dinosaurs as living animals. More than ever before, we understand how these extinct species functioned, behaved, interacted with each other and the environment, and evolved. Nevertheless, these studies rely on certain basic building blocks of knowledge, including facts about dinosaur anatomy and taxonomic relationships. One of the purposes of this volume is to unravel some of the problems surrounding dinosaur systematics and to increase our understanding of dinosaurs as a biological species. Dinosaur Systematics presents a current overview of dinosaur systematics using various examples to explore what is a species in a dinosaur, what separates genders in dinosaurs, what morphological changes occur with maturation of a species, and what morphological variations occur within a species.

Description: Geomorphologists have recently switched their attention from the processes that create land forms on a small scale to far broader processes involving tectonic and climatic changes on a global scale. This is the first comprehensive textbook to take account of these long-term changes. It covers the fundamental principles of geomorphology and is divided into three parts: the nature and structure of earth's major physical features and the results of tectonism; the processes of weathering, erosion, and deposition which create land forms; and the major bioclimatic zones of the earth, with their complexes of relict and modern land forms resulting from the numerous climatic variations of late Cenozoic time.

Description: A systematic analysis of landforms of the late Cenzoic Era that fully covers the constructional processes of tectonism and volcanism and the erosional processes of weathering, flurial erosion, glaciers, winds, and waves. It explains each set of processes and the resulting landforms in a separate chapter to provide a comprehensive, nonmathematical overview of the subject. Coverage of rock weathering includes more discussion of soils, soil formation, and soils chronosequences, which tell about the evolution of the present landscape. A chapter on The Last Glacial-Interglacial Cycle,” stresses the intensity of change during and since the last ice age when human civilization has risen, and appeals to readers to understand change as a normal factor of life on Earth.

Description: Subsurface mapping is a way to visualize various geologic and hydrologic features in any dimension from a 1-D cross section to a 4-D production map. All subsurface map types can be useful, but the key is to know what you are investigating and what map types are most appropriate.
This new book introduces different types of geophysical logs and subsurface maps that can be generated from basic well data, and subsurface problems that can be solved using geophysical logs and subsurface maps. "Hands-on" exercises reveal how each map type is generated and what applications they may have. Exercises at the end of each chapter introduce different types of wells and lithologies.
