Description: In this transcript of the Bailey Lectures given at Berkeley in March and April 1986, one of Europe's outstanding biblical scholars presents the first major study by a biblical scholar of one of the most important and most controversial phrases in contemporary theology. These lectures present a moving and scholarly account of the biblical notion of God's love for the poor. After showing that this concept was prominent among Israel's neighbors, Lohfink examines its unique meaning in the Old and New Testaments, and its affinity to and difference from liberation theology. Second edition.

Description: Drawing from postliberal, revisionary and Latin American liberation theological perspectives, David Kamitsuka offers proposals on theological method and doctrine responsive to the intellectual, pastoral and socio-political challenges of contemporary culture. He recasts intermovement polemics in order to forge a theological approach which promotes what are often considered to be competing values among these three theological movements: solidarity with the oppressed (liberationist), redescribing the Christian communal sense of scripture (postliberal), and fully critical reflection (revisionist). The author advocates an apologetic strategy entailing coherentist and consensus elements for justifying Christian claims in the pluralistic public realm. He provides a model for reading scripture theologically which addresses the challenges of poststructuralism and a globally diverse church. Kamitsuka uses rule theory to adjudicate doctrinal disputes on the relationship between salvation and political liberation, and he proposes methodological 'virtues' for theological practice rooted in practical judgments concerning the vitality and fidelity of Christian communities.

Description: "Liberation Theology and Sexuality" is a book about 'doing Liberation Theology in Latin America' in the Twenty First Century. The style of doing theology remains the same, but this book reflects the work of a new generation of liberation theologians developing a theology that offers a wider and more complex critique of reality, with new perspectives on issues of sexuality, race, gender, culture, globalization and new forms of popular religiosity. "Liberation Theology and Sexuality" shows how Christianity in Latin America needs to take into account issues concerning sexuality and poverty, together with traditional religiosity and culture when reflecting on the construction of Christian faith and identity in the continent. For the first time, "Liberation Theology and Sexuality" presents a unique combination of Latin American theologians from more than one generation, reflecting on depth on the ongoing project of the liberation of theology from economic and sexual oppressions in the continent.

Description: Jung Mo Sung has pioneered a theological analysis of economics in his previous publications, developing a penetrating ethico-religious critique of the international capitalist systems, whose institutions he likens to altars. Where ancient idolatry had visible altars, the modern altar of the global market god , is invisible, but still demands human sacrifices in the name of objective desires. Here Sung recovers theology s relevance for a world where the most dangerous idols those that sacrifice millions of people upon the altar of wealth have for too long been ignored by theology. In Desire, Market, Religion, Sung investigates themes such as the struggle against social exclusion, the relationship between economics and religion in the 21st century, where global brands and global economies reigns supreme, and theology s role in the struggle against social exclusion and the giving of hope for plenty, when the reality is scarcity.
