Description: Christians are growing more and more aware of the power of generational hurts and their effects on families. While some teaching helps identify past causes of present-day pain, Aaron Früh digs deep into the book of Genesis to reveal a powerful avenue of healing often forgotten in the church today: the spoken blessing. Früh shows how generational trauma usually has its basis in the spoken word--rejection, verbal abuse, or angry outbursts. Reversal and healing come when verbal iniquity is replaced with verbal blessing. While explaining how curses operate and how today's culture feeds on them, Früh shows through an ancient blessing in Scripture exactly how, when, and whom to bless in order to break free forever.

Description: In The God of Intimacy and Action, beloved author and activist Tony Campolo teams up with spiritual director Mary Albert Darling to show how contemplative spiritual practices can lead to greater intimacy with God and fuel passion for reaching out to others through spreading the Good News and fostering justice for the poor and oppressed. The authors reveal why this combination is not only crucial but historical and is vividly demonstrated in the lives of saints such as St. Francis of Assisi, Ignatius of Loyola, and Catherine of Siena.

Description: Mysticism, in the sense of a “longing for God,” has been present in all times, cultures, and religions. But Soelle believes it has never been more important than in this age of materialism and fundamentalism. The antiauthoritarian mystical element in each religion leads to a community of free spirits and resistance to the death-dealing aspects of our contemporary culture. Religion in the third millennium, Soelle argues, either will be mystical or it will be dead. Therefore, Soelle identifies strongly with the hunger of New Age searchers but laments the “religious fast food” they devour. Today, a kind of “democratized mysticism” of those without much religious background flourishes. This mystical experience is not drawn so much of the tradition as out of contemporary experiences. In that sense, each of us is a mystic, and Soelle’s work seeks to give theological depth, clarity, and direction. This, her magnum opus, conjoins Soelle’s deep religious knowledge and wisdom with her passion for social justice into a work destined to be a classic of religious literature. Part One: What Is Mysticism? Explores mysticism as it has appeared in major religious traditions and especially in traditional Christian figures, such as Meister Eckhart. Part Two: Locations of Mysticism. Tracks the sites of mystical experience in chapters on nature, sex, pain, community, and joy. Part Three: Resistance. Argues for the importance of mysticism in countering the destructive aspects of ego, group bias, materialism, and violence.

Description: In the Gospel of John, Jesus promised that even the most ordinary believer could work the mightiest miracles: "Anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing." In Mystics and Miracles, author Bert Ghezzi takes Jesus at his word, describing the paradoxically exalted and down-to-earth characters of Catholicism’s greatest saints. The book collects almost two dozen brief character sketches composed of lively and often humorous anecdotes, most of which concern the role of the Holy Spirit in empowering believers, and the ways that saints both desire and resist the Spirit’s power. St. Lutgarde of Awyieres, for instance, asked God to take back her healing powers when the lines of petitioners grew so long that she barely had time for prayer. Mystics and Miracles offers an easy-to-read introduction to saintly lives that will particularly appeal to young people. --Michael Joseph Gross

Description: The thought of Meister Eckhart (c. 1260-1327), Dominican philosopher and spiritual master, is among the most daring and difficult in the history of Western mysticism. Thoroughly grounded in the Scholastic method of his day and steadfastly loyal to the Church, Eckhart's love of speculation, paradox, and the apophatic way, nevertheless, resulted in the controversial condemnation of certain of his teachings by papal bull in 1329. His doctrines of detachment, the return of the soul to God, and the birth of the Son in the soul have continued to perplex his critics and nourish his disciples through the ages. This volume, based on the critical Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft edition of Eckhart's works, represents the first time that his technical Latin writings and more popular German sermons and treatises have appeared together in English.
