Description: This participant's guide accompanies a six-session small group DVD curriculum, in which award-winning author Jim Cymbala shows what the Holy Spirit can do when believers get serious about prayer and the Gospel. Cymbala tells how God moves in life-changing ways when we set aside our own agendas, take him at his Word, and listen for his voice. The DVD curriculum and leader's guide is available separately.
Details: We are using this book for a small meeting once a week with college age students. So far it has been great. We are using the DVD as well. The discussions are getting more and more interesting. This is one of those books I think you need to read more than once.
Review Summary: Good, but

Details: I really loved the video clips of people who received answers to prayer, and believe the material is well worth doing. However, the study is "long" on answers to prayer and "short" on the agonizingly long wait for those answers we sometimes face. Video clips mention the long wait, but it quickly moves to - tada - "ANSWER." I've added the questions, "What do you do when God's answer to your prayer is, 'No'?" "Do we really remind God of God's promises, or are we the ones in need of being reminded?" "Is every promise in the Bible claimable for me personally, or are there some promises made to specific people at a specific time?" "Can I take a promise out-of-context and apply it where God never meant it to be applied?"
Also, Cymbala sometimes leans toward just keep praying - and you should - without the discussion of God's sovereignty and God's refusal to override our or other's free will. Prayer is not just about petition and persistence - but equally, and perhaps more so - about listening for God and discovering God's will in the midst of hard circumstances.
Very doable and will help your congregation engage God in prayer, but it needs some tweaking to develop a deeper theology about prayer and sovereignty.

Details: This study was a hit with our church! Just about every adult came to this study and we now have a Sunday morning prayer group before service that comes just to pray for the service, worship team, pastor, congregation, etc. This book explains and shows you (through Pastor Cymbala's and people in his church) just how life transforming prayer is and can be and how important a part of church life prayer is! Every single study was exhilirating and left us looking forward to the following week!
Review Summary: Great study if you commit to it
Date: 2008-06-11
Details: The idea of the study was great and I was interested in what Jim Cymbala could offer on the subject because I know that his church is focussed on prayer and God has blessed the church body because of that.
The study itself I found to be weak. To be fair, I've lead many Bible studies for many years and this was one of the best I've lead but it had more to do with the particular group of women who were willing to be vulnerable and be committed to the discipline of prayer than the study itself.
I added in a lot of experiential ideas that created and fostered the discipline and although it is a 6-week study, the last week is virtually a write-off because it is directed to leaders in the church.
The book offers suggested segment times, which looked great on paper was was impossible to implement (have you ever been in a room with 8-10 women and given them only 20 minutes to answer 5 questions of discussion?). It's ironic that we ran out of time (and I cut out a lot) at the end to really focus on actually praying.

Details: This video series is simply fab. You'll love the Real life stories
and the great teaching from Jim. We used it for wed nights at church and it rocked. A blessing!
