Description: Beginning theology students often find themselves bewildered by a maze of beliefs represented in Christian history and tradition. Don Thorsen's An Exploration of Christian Theology unravels the knots of theology by exploring the whole Christian tradition in a simple and straightforward way. Beginning with introductory chapters on theology, revelation, and authority, this book deals with biblical teaching and Christian tradition related to such topics as God, creation, sin, Jesus Christ, salvation, and eschatology. Chapters conclude with helpful questions for further reflection and discussion. The author's own original line art, used throughout the text, keeps the reader's feet on the ground with needed comic relief. A convenient glossary of theological terms makes this an even more useful tool. This is an excellent, college level introduction to Christian theology for classroom or individual use.

Description: This third volume of Systematic Theology begins with an examination of human beings and their fall away from God. A study of the origin, nature, and effects of sin is followed by a detailed proclamation and exploration of its defeat: God's wondrous provision of salvation through the work of Christ Jesus. Included is an in-depth analysis of all applicable theories and doctrines, such as the extent of the Atonement, the nature of grace, and the assurance of heaven.

Description: With an eye to recent proposals on Paul's view of the Law and his relation to his first-century context, N. T. Wright looks in detail at passages central to the current debate. Among them are some of the most controversial sections of Paul. From his meticulous exegesis Wright argues that Paul saw the death and resurrection of Jesus as the climactic moment in the covenant history of Israel and from this perspective came to a different understanding of the function of the Jewish Law. Wright thus creates a basis from which many of the most vexed problems of Pauline exegesis can in principle be solved and longstanding theological puzzles clarified.

Description: Christians throughout history have been strengthened by their confidence that God knows everything about the future. But consider this: What if it simply is not true? What if God can only rely on His best guess about tomorrow--just as you and I do? Would it not affect your trust in Him, your confidence in facing the future, your worship, and your motivation to leave everything in His hands? And yet this is the consequence that has to be faced if you trust what a number of leading voices in evangelicalism are proposing under the doctrine of open theism. In its redefinition of the nature of divine providence, open theism adjusts the entire picture of God's sovereignty and involvement in our lives. Bruce Ware carefully summarizes and critiques this dangerous doctrine from a thoroughly biblical perspective, providing an excellent treatment of both the classical and openness views. He explores their implications and faithfully pinpoints the subtle ways that open theism undermines our trust in God and lessens His glory in our lives.

Description: The Christian does not live in a vacuum, says the author, but in a world of government, politics, labor, and marriage. Hence, Christian ethics cannot exist in a vacuum; what the Christian needs, claims Dietrich Bonhoeffer, is concrete instruction in a concrete situation. Although the author died before completing his work, this book is recognized as a major contribution to Christian ethics. The root and ground of Christian ethics, the author says, is the reality of God as revealed in Jesus Christ. This reality is not manifest in the Church as distinct from the secular world; such a juxtaposition of two separate spheres, Bonhoeffer insists, is a denial of God's having reconciled the whole world to himself in Christ. On the contrary, God's commandment is to be found and known in the Church, the family, labor, and government. His commandment permits man to live as man before God, in a world God made, with responsibility for the institutions of that world.

Description: Originally published in German in 1938, this highly acclaimed volume presents more than one thousand selections from the various extant writings of Origen, the great Alexandrian theologian. Robert J. Daly has retranslated the majority of these texts from the original Greek and Latin, added the scriptural references in the translated texts and an index, and included updated bibliographical information. "This collection has been extremely well translated into English by Fr. Daly and to him a great debt of gratitude is due for having made available the thoughts of one of the greatest of ancient theologians as seen through the eyes of an almost equally prolific successor in the same central Christian enterprise." - Heythrop Journal
