Description: "Volume 3" of "Christian Community in History", sees the completion of a major work by a highly respected and controversial theologian. The first 2 vols. of Haight's "Christian Community in History" received enormous critical attention. Of vol. 2, the reviewer in the Anglican Theological Review wrote: "This work is worthy of celebration. It is both genuinely historical and honestly ecumenical. It models a way of handling history which is both thorough and gentle. Above all, it is first-class scholarship. Anyone who cares about the theology of the church must read it." Of the same volume, the reviewer in the "Journal of the American Academy of Religion" concluded: "This is a work of immense scholarship; yet it is wonderfully accessible in style and prose. It deserves to become the standard work in its field for some time to come." Catholic Library World dubbed it "a major contribution...highly recommended for anyone interested in theology and the history of the Church.""Ecclesial Existence" is the constructive, systematic "transdenominational" ecclesiology that serves as the conclusion to Haight's magisterial work. The key to Haight's ecclesiology is Bernard Lonergan's classic description of the movement from a classical-universalist consciousness to a historical-empiricist consciousness. Applied to ecclesiology, the classical-universalist approach is monistic and transcendental, while the historical-empiricist approach is pluralistic. Thus the first two volumes of "Christian Community in History" described the historical diversity of the church across its history (up to the Reformation in vol. 1) and among the churches (since the Reformation in vol. 2). By contrast, vol. 3 is an attempt to describe what the churches possess in common, i.e., to retrieve ecclesiological constants from history reaching back to scriptural origins in order to construct and portray the common ecclesial existence shared by the churches. In more traditional terms, it aims to find the apostolicity, the catholicity, and the unity amidst the plurality of the churches.

Description: Known as the 'Father of modern theology' Friedrich Schleiermacher is without a doubt one of the most important theologians in the history of Christianity. Not only relevant to theology, he also made significant contributions in areas of philosophy such as hermeneutics, ethics, philosophy of religion, and the study of Plato, among other topics. He was ahead of his time as well in espousing a kind of proto-feminism. Divided into three parts, this Companion considers elements of Schleiermacher's philosophy such as metaphysics, epistemology of religious knowledge, ethics, hermeneutics, and contributions to Plato scholarship, as well as theological topics such as sin, redemption and Christology, and his understanding of culture.

Description: he Reformed churches of the sixteenth century affirmed the need to be semper reformanda--always reforming.

But in the ensuing centuries, some have taken this conviction as a mandate to abandon the departure from received orthodoxy, while others have progressed toward a rigid confessionalism that cements the Reformation itself as a final codification of truth.

Between these extremes is the ongoing need of the church to be always reforming--subjecting its beliefs and practices to the renewed scrutiny of Holy Scripture and restating the truth of Scriptures in ways that faithfully communicate the gospel, advance the mission of the church and empower the people of God.

This collection of essays by senior theologians and edited by A. T. B. McGowan practices what it preaches, mining the whole terrain of systematic theology to refresh, renew and yes, even reform the church for its next season.

Description: Since its original publication, God-The World's Future, has been widely and successfully as a comprehensive textbook in systematic theology explicitly crafted in light of the postmodern context. It explains the whole body of Christian historical doctrine from within a "proleptic" framework, "whereby the gospel is understood as announcing the pre-actualization of the future consummation of all things in Jesus Christ." This concept is skillfully deployed not only to organize the various theological areas or loci but also to rethink doctrines in light of key postmodern challenges from ecumenism, critical historical thinking, contemporary science, and gender relations. In this edition, Peters has updated each chapter, made substantive changes in the book's treatment of God and Christ's "offices," and elaborated his theology in light of developments in feminist and deconstructive theologies.
