Description: This book looks at the influential metaphor of describing sin as 'homo incurvatus in se' (humanity being curved in on oneself) from its origins in Augustine to Luther, Barth and Feminist theology. Matt Jenson argues that the image of being 'curved in on oneself' is the best paradigm for understanding sin relationally, that it has sufficient explanatory breadth and depth to be of service to contemporary Christian theology. He looks to Augustine as the Christian source for this image in his various references to humanity's turn to itself, though the threads of a relational account of sin are not drawn together with any systematic consequence until Martin Luther's description of 'homo incurvatus in se' in his commentary on "Romans". Luther radicalizes Augustine's conception by applying this relational view of sin to the totus homo and by emphasizing its appearance, above all, in homo religiosus. The Western tradition of sin understood paradigmatically as pride has been recently called into question by feminist theologians. Daphne Hampson's critique of Luther on this front is considered and critiqued. Though she is right to call attention to the insufficiency of his and Augustine's myopic focus on pride, the question remains whether 'incurvatus in se' can operate paradigmatically as an umbrella concept covering a far wider range of sins. Karl Barth's extension of 'incurvatus in se' to apply more broadly to pride, sloth and falsehood suggests that incurvature can do just that.

Description: The truth of God is rich and multifaceted. Though a coherent body of revelation, the Bible comes to us through a variety of inspired authors, metaphors, and themes highlighting the many facets of God's truth. Likewise, our theological formulations capture manifold emphases--distinct "perspectives" on the whole--which collectively enable us to gain a fuller understanding of the truth. Poythress explains, "We use what we have gained from one perspective to reinforce, correct, or improve what we understood through another. I call this procedure 'symphonic theology' because it is analogous to a blending of various musical instruments to express the variation of a symphonic theme." The implications of this approach are far-reaching for theology and praxis.

Description: "We worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity." (Athanasian Creed, 6th century A.D. The triunity of the Christian God is not just one isolated doctrine among others. Allan Coppedge unfolds the implications of the trinitarian being of God for our entire understanding of the nature, character and acts of God. Building on the theology of the church from the early church fathers, tracing it through the Reformation and down to current theological treatments of the Trinity, Coppedge draws out the implications for our understanding of God's nature, attributes, roles, and relationship to creation and providence.

Description: Exploring Theology begins with God probing his nature, character, and work, including a helpful explanation of the Trinity. Then, to keep you from getting lost in the swirl of today,s ideas, you will find a concise presentation of the twelve basic beliefs that separate Christianity from all other religions. After establishing the groundwork, the authors then examine both the historical and physical evidence for the Christian faith, addressing common questions about Christ's resurrection, creation, fulfilled prophecy, the reliability of the Bible, and the changed lives of believers. Throughout the book, you ll also find discussion questions, ideas for applying what you've learned, and further resources to enhance your individual or group study. Our faith is not a blind leap into the dark but a sensible step into the light, says Robert J. Morgan. So whether you want to be ready to answer a friend who doubts that Christianity is true or you re looking to resolve lingering doubts, this book offers a solid base from which to take a step of faith and experience the ultimate assurance that comes from knowing and living the truth.

Description: "'Small Talks on Big Questions' is a treasure! I cannot think of any title published in recent times which so captivatingly and soundly matches up a Bible story with a story from church history, as this book. This is one of the richest volumes parents have at their disposal, both to train their children in solid doctrine and to whet an appetite for church history. And to have the two volumes compiled together into one will only increase the great usefulness of this outstanding tool!" ~ Dennis Gundersen / Grace & Truth Books

Description: The essays included in this volume focus on specific standpoints inherent to our understandings of God. From a survey of Western philosophies, Pannenberg concludes that the Christian view of truth is distinctive because of its emphasis on the future. On the subject of faith, he asserts that rational knowledge does not oppose faith, but rather gives support to it. Also, the ideas of Feuerbach and Nietzsche as well as those of the dialectical theologians are critiqued by the author. All in all, Pannenberg's uniting of classic theological insights with contemporary life will speak to the contemporary appropriation of traditional Christian themes. In this classic, two-volume set of collected essays, Wolfhart Pannenberg gives special focus to the ways in which history, hermeneutics, reason, and truth all guide and inform our various attempts at understanding God. This focus, then, offers the reader a unique insight into the revelation of God. Pannenberg writes, "To say that the revelation of God is not a supernatural event which breaks into history perpendicularly from above but rather that it is the theme of history itself, the power that moves it in its deepest dimension, is to say something about God and his relation to the world."
