Description: In this thoughtful, probing study, Os Guinness leads readers in an in-depth examination of the deadly vices. The reader will better understand the classic notion of virtue and vice and how these ideas connect to the Beatitudes. Presenting the truth of the Bible in the context of modern society, other faiths, and 3,000 years of history, Guinness analyzes the corruption of ethics in academia and popular culture to reestablish the deadly seriousness of vice in an age of moral confusion. This is the second in a series of six Trinity Forum studies which combine classical and current readings with provocative discussion questions. The Trinity Forum has been successfully using this material for over eight years in their private leadership forums.

Description: Chief Justice Roy Moore believes the state must acknowledge the moral principles on which America was founded and that it is not illegal to do so. While the separation of church and state may be a credible and legitimate tenet, it has been largely misconstrued and abused during the last forty years. Moore was sworn to uphold the Constitution of the United States. His critics, both within conservative circles and without, have maintained that he violated the law by disobeying the order of a federal judge to remove a monument of the Ten Commandments. But Moore brilliantly argues that those who have ordered him to violate his oath have, in fact, broken the law. So Help Me God will articulate why he believes elected and appointed government officials have the right and the obligation to acknowledge God as the foundation of American government and jurisprudence.

Description: The Beatitudes of Jesus stand in sharp contrast to what ancient believers identified as the Seven Deadly Sins. Both promise us life at its fullest—but only one delivers. Setting the Beatitudes one by one against the Sins, Seven reveals how the Beatitudes point us from the nothingness that devours to the blessedness that restores and fills.

Description: Through politics, marketing, news programming, and popular culture we are taught to fear, often in ways that profit others. But what does all this fear do to our moral lives as it forms (or deforms) our character and our judgment? Drawing on Christian scripture and tradition, Following Jesus in a Culture of Fear articulates a response to fear that resists an ethic of security in favor of fostering an ethic of risk. The Christian virtues of hospitality, peacefulness, and generosity are presented as the way to defeat the counter-virtues of suspicion, preemption, and control. Pastors, students, and lay people will find this unique book both accessible and intriguing. EXCERPT Do not be afraid. We live in a time when this biblical refrain cannot be repeated too often. Both John Paul II in 1978 and his successor, Benedict XVI, in 2005 used these words to begin their papacies. Among all the things the church has to say to the world today, this may be the most important. No one has to be convinced that we live in fearful times, though we are not always sure what we should be afraid of and why. We suspect that our fears make us vulnerable to manipulation, but we find it hard to quell the fear long enough to analyze how it is being produced and directed for the benefit of others. One reason we are a more fearful culture today, despite the fact that the dangers are not objectively greater than in the past, is because some people have incentives and means to heighten, manipulate, and exploit our fears. Fear is a strong motivator, and so those who want and need to motivate others--politicians, advertisers, media executives, advocacy groups, even the church--turn to fear to bolster their message. I call this the "fear for profit" syndrome, and it is rampant. We have become preoccupied with unlikely dangers that take on the status of imminent threats, producing a culture where fear determines a disproportionate number of our personal and communal decisions. The sense of ever-increasing threats can overwhelm our ability to evaluate and respond proportionately to each new risk, thus we allow fear to overdetermine our actions.

Description: For most committed Christians, there is a strong link between religion and life. It isn't just a case of going to church on a Sunday and forgetting about moral values for the rest of the week (o.k., it may be the case for some Christians, but they aren't going to be buying this book anyway). The big issue is, though, what exactly are moral values? The Ten Commandments, God's ultimate guide to morality, are a good place to start, which is exactly what best-selling "Morehouse" author, Anne Robertson does. She examines the moral questions of the day through the lens of each of the Ten Commandments and concludes that there is more than one Christian approach to difficult issues. For example, the chapter on the 6th Commandment Thou Shalt Not Kill, looks at killing in its broadest sense - war, capital punishment, abortion and stem cell research. Can a one size fits all approach be applicable to these different facets? No, says Robertson. Furthermore, she believes that God's commandments have a social as well as a personal dimension. Ultimately, this book is a call for balance and unity in the one place all Christians should come together: the love of God in Christ.

Description: "What was already a stellar theological compendium of health care ethics a decade ago has been fully revised to meet the challenges of a new century, from the genome project, adult and embryonic stem cell research and genetic therapies to new controversies over end-of-life care. Clearly rooted in the Catholic, natural law and personalist traditions, it astutely weighs diverse opinions within Catholicism, as well as alternative approaches from other Christian and non-religious thinkers. . . . A treasure." —John F. Kavanaugh S.J., Director of Ethics Across the Curriculum, Saint Louis University

Description: It's said that decisions are made in the details. And yet, we make hundreds, even thousands of decisions daily. So how do Christians process all those details and come up with answers that please God? Author, lecturer, and radio personality, Haddon W. Robinson, takes his usual clear-eyed, not-a-word-wasted approach, helping us make decisions according to biblical principlesevery time.
