Description: Realizing that society, economics and science are today challenged to devise a new theoretical framework for forestry Sustainable Forestry presents a unique vision of forestry for the next century. In this important new book Chris Maser covers the ecological characteristics of forests; asking - what makes up a forest? He discusses the science and technology of forestry and the uncertainties we face in our attempts to manage forests throughout the world.Sustainable Forestry also deals with current management problems within the forestry profession, beginning with university training and ending with dysfunction in land management agencies. Proposals for change are given, covering in detail what that means, how it's effected and how it's perceived. Important topics such as forest planning, establishing an environmental vision and resolving conflicts are also discussed. Maser concludes with the possibilities for sustainable forestry into the twenty-first century, specifically discussing adaptive ecosystem management.

Description: Between 1870 and 1942, successive generations of Asians and Asian Americans predominantly Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino formed the predominant body of workers in the Pacific Coast canned-salmon industry. This study traces the shifts in the ethnic and gender composition of the cannery labor market from its origins through it decline and examines the workers' creation of work cultures and social communities. Resisting the label of cheap laborer, these Asian American workers established formal and informal codes of workplace behavior, negotiated with contractors and recruiters, and formed alliances to organize the workforce. Whether he is discussing Japanese women workers' sharing of child-care responsibilities or the role of Filipino workers in establishing the Cannery and Field Workers Union, Chris Friday portrays Asian and Asian American workers as people who, while enduring oppressive restrictions, continually attempted to shape their own lives. Chris Friday is Assistant Professor of History at Western Washington University.

Description: The ruby is the world's most precious and rare stone. For the ancient Hindus, the ruby was Rajnapura: the Gem of Gems, at whose heart surges an eternal, unquenchable flame. Yet, for all its rarity and beauty, the ruby has always been a slightly sinister stone. Indian legend says the ruby was born from the blood of a demon. Indeed, the ruby is very close to a wild, living being: fiery, passionate, and dangerous. It has been at the center of love and wars, a symbol of passion, greed, and strong magic. Ancient sages and modern crystal healers have credited it with strange powers--from the granting of prophetic insight to protecting one from bullets. It has long been part of the human journey: coveted, fought over, and feared. In Fire and Blood, Morgan considers all the beautiful and terrifying facets of this magnificent stone: scientific, economic, mythological, and spiritual. She discusses the great stones and great heists of the ruby world--and the famous fakes, too--the great Black Prince and renowned Timur. The book closes with a discussion of the making of synthetic rubies and the laser beam.

Description: The second edition of "Groundwater Geochemistry – A practical guide to modeling of natural and contaminated aquatic systems" remains a comprehensive text book offering beginners and advanced modelers alike a minimum theoretical background and a strong focus on the practical solution of geochemical modeling with PHREEQC. The new edition covers the possibility of using the CD-MUSIC concept within the new version of PHREEQC. Examples for reactive transport use PHREEQC´s 1d features as well as the coupled 3d code PHAST with the graphical user interface WPHAST. Implementing uncertainties of thermodynamic data is addressed by means of the program LJUNGSKILE. As in the first edition, detailed descriptions on how to solve each problem guide the user step by step from basic to more and more advanced hydrogeochemical modeling. The computer programs and the solutions for all problems (PHREEQC input files) are enclosed on a CD.

Description: The goal of urban forestry is to understand the ecological, institutional, and human issues at work in the urban landscape. Urban forestry is a comparatively new field within the academic discipline of forestry, and is closely allied to several scientific disciplines as well as the social sciences. Professionals in the field are called upon to provide scientific information and guidance, and to justify in economic, social, and environmental terms the value of the urban landscape in relation to other uses of the land and other needs of the city. The multidisciplinary approach of this book recognizes the dilemma that in the attempt to solve problems by developing landscapes that address specific goals such as fire safety, energy and water conservation, and wildlife preservation, other problems are sometimes created because scientific knowledge is lacking or because not all aspects of the situation have been considered. Urban Forest Landscapes takes a critical look at the current state of knowledge and research in the field, and at how available information is applied in the urban setting. The book includes contributions by twenty specialists. Several articles outline the development of urban forestry in the United States and the use of trees in urban environments in the European and North American cultural tradition. Others consider the environmental setting: the level of scientific knowledge, public policy and perceptions of land management needs, human needs, land use laws and regulations, political and administrative issues, and economic approaches. Another group of articles discuss scenic value, management of greenbelts and forest remnants, wildlife habitat design, energy-efficientlandscapes, water conservation, and fire-safe landscape. A final section focuses on sustainability of urban forest landscapes, both from a conceptual perspective and by presenting two practical case studies of managed forests in an urban environment.

Description: Few issues in recent B.C. history have been as controversial as the debate over the management of the West Coast salmon fishery. In this remarkable book, author Dennis Brown sets the record straight. He chronicles the scandalous mismanagement of our Pacific salmon resource and the maritime culture it supported. Moreover, he explains why it happened and what needs to be done to reverse the process-even at this late date.

Description: In this informative and essential book, a team of scholars and policy experts from both Indonesia and the larger international community review political and economic developments in post-Soeharto era Indonesia. Together, they consider the kinds of structures that would foster social, economic, and environmental sustainability. The fall of Soeharto in 1998 provided the impetus for the transformation of Indonesia's political system to one that is considerably more democratic and decentralized. But what has this meant for Indonesia's natural resources? The stakes for the nation and the international community are considerable. In physical and biological resources, Indonesia is a wealthy country. It is a world leader in mineral exports, its rainforests account for more than 50 percent of the tropical forests in Southeast Asia and more than 10 percent of the world's total, it has unique and extensive biodiversity resources, and its fisheries are some of the world's most productive and threatened. The challenges in using and managing the vast natural resources of Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous nation, are immense. They include ensuring that resources are exploited in a manner that is optimal for the economy, equitable for the population, and sustainable for future generations. While recent and rapid political change under Reformasi and decentralization may seem to have provided opportunities for long-term development that embraces these goals, they have also generated an environment of political uncertainty, weak law enforcement, insecurity over property rights, and increased local conflict. This situation, together with an imperative to accelerate the pace of socio-economic progress, has created a pressing need to address the challenges of proper use and management of natural resources. Description: Under the Blade: The Conversion of Agricultural Landscapes examines the patterns, causes, and consequences of current land use decisions in the United States, particularly the conversion of farmland to housing, roads, and other development. Changes in land use are the result of complex interactions among law, economics, landscape characteristics, social and political forces, ethics, and aesthetics. By examining farmland loss from each of these perspectives, and then integrating the results into policy recommendations, Under the Blade makes an important contribution to the ongoing debate on the optimal use of a finite resource-land.
