Description: The stars in the night sky over the Hawaiian Islands overwhelm us with feelings of wonder and amazement. They provoke images of Hawaii's first people, sailing from far away lands, finding their way by use of the stars in the heavens. Their knowledge of the skies, from the Hokupaa (North Star) to the Hanaiakamalama (Southern Cross) helped them navigate the vast Pacific in double-hulled canoes without use of compasses or maps. In contrast, today’s astronomers have explored the heavens with the use of advanced telescopes, satellites and space vehicles traveling to our moon and planets beyond. Stars Over Hawaii presents an overview of current knowlege about the night sky above us and the vast universe beyond. Twelve monthly star charts, plus two which label star names in Hawaiian, will help guide you through the year in your own explorations of Hawaii’s brilliant starlit sky. Readers can learn about the phenomenon known locally as "Lahaina Noon" which cannot happen in the mainland United States. Hawaiian astronomy is explored through legend and what oral knowledge has survived to the present time. The chapter on Polynesian Voyaging and Wayfinding includes Mau’s Compass and the Hawaiian star compasses designed by Nainoa Thompson and reproduced with the generous permission of the Polynesian Voyaging Society. Originally compiled by Edwin H. Bryan, Jr. in 1955, this revised edition of Stars Over Hawaii contains a tremendous amount of new information contributed by Dr. Richard Crowe, Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Included in this version are current theories about the formation of our solar system and knowledge gained through space exploration and powerful modern telescopes. Appendix One, which explores night and day, and the biography of the author were contributed by Dr. Walt Steiger, Professor Emeritus of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Stars Over Hawaii marries the knowledge of the masterful navigators of ancient Hawaii with today’s astronomy experts to bring you an all-encompassing view of Hawaii’s skies, past and present.

Description: To gaze at the stars is one thing; to capture that gaze in photographs is something else, a tantalizing scientific art that many attempt and few master. That rare mastery is on full display in this beautiful volume of space photography from thirty of the most accomplished astrophotographers in the world, both professional and amateur. Galaxies, star clusters, nebulae, and other deep-sky treasures fill the pages. Along with the marvels of the night sky--the Andromeda and Whirlpool galaxies, the Pleiades and the Praesepe, the Orion and Crab nebulae, and many more--each section features a profile of the photographer’s work, techniques, philosophy, and experiences. Compiled by the world's leading amateur astrophotographer, with an introduction to the history of space photography, this spectacular volume is an essential for every stargazer’s bookshelf.

Description: Double stars are the rule, rather than the exception: our solar system, having a single sun, is in the minority. Orbiting satellites, ground-based observatories and interferometers have all helped discover many hundreds of new pairs - but this has left enormous numbers of wide, faint pairs under-observed or not observed at all. This is where amateur astronomers can help. Bob Argyle, a professional astronomer at Cambridge University, shows where enthusiastic amateur observers can best direct their efforts. The book caters for the use of every level of equipment, from simple commercial telescopes to micrometers and CCD cameras. Amateur astronomers who have gone beyond "sight-seeing” and want to make a genuine scientific contribution will find this a fascinating and rewarding field - and this book provides all the background and practical information that’s needed.

Description: Texas comes alive in the pages of Wild Texas. Wild Texas contains more than 150 full-color photographs of Texas’s natural wonders. Author and photographer Richard Reynolds traveled thousands of miles to give us this photographic portrait of the six diverse and unique natural areas of our state. Texas is often thought of as the state with wide open spaces, but it is much more. It is mountain peaks that tower 9,000 feet in the west and the sandy beaches of the Gulf Coast in the east. It is stunning wildflowers of the Hill Country and the big skies of the panhandle. It is the acres of pine forests of the Piney Woods region and the rainbow palette of mountains and desert of Big Bend. Wild Texas is the natural beauty of our state; it is what we see, hear, and feel as we paddle the spring-fed Guadalupe River above Canyon Dam, hike the Ranchioeras Loop Trail at Big Bend Ranch State Park, look across the limestone cliffs that tower above pristine emerald pools of the Pecos River as it winds its way toward the Amistad International Reservoir. It is the pounding of a powerful surf on the Padre Island National Seashore, the history experienced through the Petroglyphs that cover the walls of Painted Canyon. It is that still, golden afternoon when you know the Lone Star State is where you’re meant to be.

Description: A decade in the making, this book is based on hundreds of hours of in-depth interviews with each of the twenty-four moon voyagers, as well as those who contributed their brain power, training and teamwork on Earth. In his preface Chaikin writes, "We touched the face of another world and became a people without limits." What follows are thrilling accounts of such remarkable experiences as the rush of a liftoff, the heart-stopping touchdown on the moon, the final hurdle of re-entry, competition for a seat on a moon flight, the tragic spacecraft fire, and the search for clues to the origin of the solar system on the slopes of lunar mountains. "I've been there. Chaikin took me back."--Gene Cernan, Apollo 17 astronaut
