Victoria Osteen An Interview with Victoria Osteen

Q: What inspired you to write the book and how did you come to the title?

A: I founded the women’s ministry here at Lakewood Church which now has several hundred women. It was through conversations with these women about the issues that were important to them where I discovered we all share many of the same concerns and issues. I wrote the book in order to address those issues. The title, Love Your Life just came to me one day.

Q: What motivates you in your work on a daily basis?

A: I see how God is using this ministry to touch people all over the world. We get thousands of letters and emails from people whose lives have been changed, who have found hope in the midst of adversity, and who are inspired to keep rising higher in their everyday life.

Q: You have inspired so many people with your message. Who has inspired you the most?

A: My parents and my husband have been my greatest inspiration. I have always been blessed in this way. My parents not only instilled faith in me but they taught me the importance of family as well. Joel inspires me on a daily basis. He lives such a life of mercy, compassion and integrity.

Q: How do you think life has changed for your children vs. how things were for you when you grew up?

A: Actually, things are not that different. My family was very close to one another just as we are today. Perhaps, the biggest difference might be that my kids live near all of their cousins, aunts and uncles while I grew up several hundred miles from mine. My kids are able to interact with their extended family on a daily basis and I think that is great. Growing up, I would have liked to see my cousins as much as my kids get to see theirs.

Q: Does your full schedule allow you some quality time by yourself? What is your favorite way to relax?

A: I enjoy exercising and reading. But my favorite way to relax is to just hang out with Joel and the kids. We laugh and have great fun together.

As an idealistic twenty-three-year-old English teacher at Wilson High School in Long beach, California, Erin Gruwell confronted a room of “unteachable, at-risk” students. One day she intercepted a note with an ugly racial caricature, and angrily declared that this was precisely the sort of thing that led to the Holocaust—only to be met by uncomprehending looks. So she and her students, using the treasured books Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl and Zlata’s Diary: A Child’s Life in Sarajevo as their guides, undertook a life-changing, eye-opening, spirit-raising odyssey against intolerance and misunderstanding. They learned to see the parallels in these books to their own lives, recording their thoughts and feelings in diaries and dubbing themselves the “Freedom Writers” in homage to the civil rights activists “The Freedom Riders.”

With funds raised by a “Read-a-thon for Tolerance,” they arranged for Miep Gies, the courageous Dutch woman who sheltered the Frank family, to visit them in California, where she declared that Erin Gruwell’s students were “the real heroes.” Their efforts have paid off spectacularly, both in terms of recognition—appearances on “Prime Time Live” and “All Things Considered,” coverage in People magazine, a meeting with U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley—and educationally. All 150 Freedom Writers have graduated from high school and are now attending college.

With powerful entries from the students’ own diaries and a narrative text by Erin Gruwell, The Freedom Writers Diary is an uplifting, unforgettable example of how hard work, courage, and the spirit of determination changed the lives of a teacher and her students.

The authors’ proceeds from this book will be donated to The Tolerance Education Foundation, an organization set up to pay for the Freedom Writers’ college tuition. Erin Gruwell is now a visiting professor at California State University, Long Beach, where some of her students are Freedom Writers.
