Description: "An impressive array of selections. They show common ethics that transcend the narrow confines of sectarianism." ATLANTA JOURNAL & CONSTITUTION Beneath the seeming differences of all the world's great religions, lies a pool of universal truth. ONENESS collects these beliefs together for the first time, in the actual words of each religion's scriptures. These universal principles act as a guide to inner development, and allow each individual to achieve spiritual richness.

Description: In July 1996, an historic five-day meeting occurred of Buddhist and Christian monks and nuns at the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky, USA. It was his Holiness the Dalai Lama who suggested that the meeting be held in a monastic setting, where he could be "a monk among other monks," and who urged that the setting be Gethsemani, home of Thomas Merton, whom the Dalai Lama had met before the latter's death in 1968. The theme of the Gethsemani Encounter was the spiritual life in the Buddhist and Christian monastic traditions. Part one of this work offers 25 presentations on various aspects of spirituality by leading Buddhist and Christian practitioners. The subjects range from the nature of ultimate reality and spirituality to prayer and meditiation, growth and development in spiritual practice, community and spiritual guidance, and spirituality and society. Part Two contains highlights of the actual dialogue itself.

Description: The Shortest Distance between a human being and the truth is a story............ 'Finding a suitable story to tell the children during Sunday worship is one of the hardest tasks of any minister, and yet it is not a job that can be neglected, because story time is one of the most rewarding sections of the service, enjoyed by the adults as well as the children. In fact, even when no children are present, the adults will often demand a story! All of us it seems, young and old, are programmed to respond with delight to those wonderful words, 'Once upon a time..', and it is quite likely that the children's story is remembered long after the sermon has been forgotten. This anthology has been compiled as a resource for the busy worship leader, the Sunday school teacher, and the schoolteacher who regularly presides over non-denominational assemblies. The individual stories have been taken from all the major spiritual traditions and so, together, provide a non-didactic introduction to ecumenical and interfaith understanding, so crucial in these days when doctrinaire fundamentalism seems to be growing as a response to religious diversity.' 101 Classic stories from the world's spiritual traditions, collected and retold by Bill Darlison, with an introduction and comprehensive notes. Suggestions for appropriate biblical stories are given in an appendix. Ideal for: Interfaith worship Sunday school School assemblies Private meditation. Rev. Bill Darlison is Minister of Dublin Unitarian Church.

Description: Protestant and Roman Catholic scholars have conferred in recent decades to reconsider their theological differences. Conversation regarding Paul's doctrine of justification led to a breakthrough in 1999 with the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification. This book recounts, assesses, and continues that conversation. The contributors are David G. Truemper (on the Joint Declaration), David M. Rylaarsdam (patristic interpretation), Randall C. Zachman (medieval and Reformation understandings), Joseph A. Fitzmyer (Catholic interpretation of Paul), Richard E. DeMaris (responding to Fitzmyer), John Reumann (Lutheran interpretation of Paul), Margaret M. Mitchell (responding to Reumann), Susan K. Wood (Catholic reception of the Joint Declaration), Michael J. Root (Lutheran reception of the Joint Declaration), and David E. Aune (on recent Pauline scholarship). Bible students, pastors, and theologians will find these essays enlightening and helpful.

Description: "As a thinker, mystic, and social critic, Simone Weil is one of the most extraordinary figures of the twentieth century. She was a Marxist who experienced the relations of power between producing and ruling classes firsthand as a field and factory worker. She was an internationalist who felt that the fall of Paris was a "great day for Indo-China," and yet she wanted to fight for France. She was a mystic and self-styled Christian who refused to join the church because of its intolerance and exclusivism. The scope of her thought is remarkable, and this concise book covers it all: religion, politics, science, history, and culture. What comes through strongly are Weil's power of analysis and criticism, her love of truth and hunger for justice, her commitment to nonviolence, and, most of all, her regard for everyone and everything marginalized or excluded by orthodoxies and establishments, whether colonized people or heresy."--BOOK JACKET.
