Description: Universalism and Religions: Quaker Universalist Reader Number 2 Publisher: Quaker Universalist Fellowship Thirty-six Quaker Universalist authors from Great Britain and the U.S. write about "Universalism and Religions". This is the second of a three part collection which includes "Quaker Universalism" and our forthcoming "Universalism and Spirituality". The first chapter, What Is Universalism? is about the concept of universalism - is it about universal salvation, a universal Light, or what? The second, What Is Universal? is about the quest for human universals: do we have a common spirituality, say, or a common set of morals, or common basis of religion? The last three chapters look at universalism and religion, specifically Quakerism, a more orthodox Christianity, and finally non-Christian religions. $16.95 Available from your bookstore or from www.universalistfriends.org

Description: Most Bible introductions are the product of a single person or present only one perspective. Written by and for people from a variety of faith traditions, this distinctive introduction represents the work of 15 Protestant and Catholic scholars—all members of the same theological faculty, but representing a diversity of backgrounds and approaches. Part I introduces the Bible itself: its library-like character; its geography, history, and archaeology; the books of each Testament; important noncanonical books; the Bible’s various Jewish and Christian forms; and its transmission and translation. Part II covers the interpretation of the Bible at various times, in various traditions, and for various reasons: in the premodern period and in the modern and postmodern eras, including recent critical, theological, and ideological approaches; in Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox, and African-American Churches; and for spiritual growth, social justice, and Christian unity. Offering helpful insight into how Christians (and others) have agreed and disagreed in their approaches to the Bible, it provides students with a clear, succinct introduction to Scripture as divine and human word. "As the reader moves from one Christian tradition to another, common problems and the challenge that all Christians must face to keep theWord of the Bible alive in the Churches and in society emerge. Beautifully written, this is a book that could be read with profit by anyone—from the professor to the person in the pew, and beyond." —Francis J. Moloney, SDB, The Catholic University of America "This is a splendidly conceived and excellently executed volume. It covers an amazing amount of ground—muchmore than the proverbial bird's eye view, but never allows itself to get lost in fine detail. A beginning student at adult education level could not ask for a better or clearer introduction to the study of the Bible." —James D. G. Dunn, University of Durham

Description: This strong indictment of the current prison system, undertaken by two respected experts on behalf of the American Friends Service Committee, traces the history and features of our penal system, offers strong ethical and moral assessments of it, and lays out a whole new paradigm of criminal justice based on restorative justice and reconciliation. The book puts forward a 12-point plan for immediate changes. Beyond Prisons opens a long-needed national dialogue on our responsibilities as citizens and as a nation to provide remediation rather than mere retributive incarceration, answerable to the common good and the justice of God.

Description: This book argues that Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, locked as they have been over the centuries in many kinds of mutual enmity and violence, now need to join resources to resist the destructive economic and political forces now on the loose across the globe, some of which distrust among these faiths has tended to intensify. Such a project requires relational practices among the faiths, all of them based on mutual moral commitments that draw on the respective communities' scriptural traditions of covenantal promise-keeping. That is, each tradition has a gift of responsibility, both to its God and to its people. Mudge wants to plumb the resources of each of these religions and encourage them to be responsible in taking these gifts seriously.Such relational practices are hardly used as resources in interreligious dialogue. Mudge contends that Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are called to practice moral hospitality and covenantal humanism in order to foster justice and responsibility in societies around the globe.

Description: This anthology of essays is an exploration of Christianity and secularisation in contemporary society, expressed in the author's distinctive voice. He provides a broad view of central issues in inter-Orthodox, Orthodox-Protestant and Orthodox-Catholic dialogues. The book describes Christian churches and ecumenical bodies that are under pressure both from modern culture and due to their own, internal struggles. Social forces of secularisation act on churches and individuals, causing faith to become more personal as religion is robbed of its proper public role. Some respond to modernity by trying to revise traditional standards of belief and practice. The contrast between such theological experimentation and the preservation of tradition is seen as a fundamental source of the churches' disunity. Drawing on extensive experience of ecumenical encounters, the bishop calls for the opening of "a true dialogue, not just a monologue", a dialogue in which "we must be able not only to criticize others, but also to be self-critical".
