Description: This text is available in French. This book offers a series of seven biblical commentaries by Christian authors from varied cultural settings and regions of the world. Passages of scripture have been selected to provide biblically oriented perspectives on the theme of the ninth assembly of the World Council of Churches, "God, in your grace, transform the world". The assembly, to be held in February 2006 at Porto Alegre, Brazil, provides an opportunity for Christians everywhere to contemplate the nature of God's grace and the ways in which God is transforming the world. Readers and local groups are invited to hear the voices and consider the experience of the interpreters writing in "Springs of Living Water". Each chapter concludes with suggestions for further discussion and the question, "How does this Bible study help us understand and respond to the theme, 'God, in your grace, transform the world'?" The answers will challenge Christians at many levels with invitations to action in support of faithful witness, unity, justice, service and peace.

Description: Churches today are caught in a sociological trap. Parishioners want to keep comfortable status quo organization. Churchmen feel the pressure to modernize, to "get where the action is." This book is a provocative and zesty analysis of the problem.

Dishonest to God? The churches have followed corporations in emphasizing fat figures and solid annual growth. If religion were sold like stocks you would have the "high fliers" like the booming Southern Baptists and the Roman Catholics, the "blue chip" denominations-Episcopalians, Congregationalists, and Presbyterians-and then those with small growth potential like the Jews.

The "sick" clergy. Most clergymen of the various faiths, needless to say, are not alcoholic or homosexual. On the other hand enough clergymen have these problems to cause concern, and beyond the slippery labels of neuroses there are enough inward tortured people in the clergy to make church authorities wonder what in heaven is wrong.

The future. One of the basic models for churchly change is ecumenism, but although ecumenism may look good on the drawing board, it has some very formidable hurdles before it.... There is no sign in the heavens that the organized religion in America will be granted a resurrection.

Description: The ecumenical movement of the 20th century was a quest for unity born of a missionary concern for the world. Thus, from the beginning of present-day ecumenism, mission has been inextricably linked with unity. This volume explores the themes of unity, mission, and their relationship. Seventeen Roman Catholic and Protestant scholars offer essays in honour of George Vandervelde, a leading evangelical ecumenist from the Reformed tradition.

Description: This book offers a collection of stories from Christian communities, as reported to consultations on healing ministries held in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Faith healing and spiritual cures have formed a part of Christian ministry from the time of Jesus. Yet to many, these practices smack of magic, mysticism and irrational beliefs that seem deeply alien to Western patterns of religion. Conversely, these Western patterns strike some Christians in other parts of the world as the dry fruits of aging, shrinking churches that are losing contact with the living source of healing power. It is in the midst of this tension that the world's greatest contemporary pandemic, HIV/AIDS, is challenging all the churches and changing concepts of what healing ministry means. The call to healing is also a call for change in the relationship of Christians and their churches to others around them, and to the world itself. Positive responses to this calling offer potential for life-transforming empowerment in the lives of individuals and in the life of the world.

But word of the amulet spreads quickly and Derek soon finds his life, as well as the lives of those around him, in mortal danger. The Nine Lands is the gripping account of Derek’s journey east to the great city of Gelbinor, the city of scholars, where he believes he will ultimately find the truth behind his amulet. He is accompanied by his best friend, Morgan, a deeply traditional and religious man, and by his daughter, Rebecca, an inquisitive young woman, struggling to find herself.
