Description: Today more and more people of different religions have the chance to meet. How should they interact with each other so that they foster mutual understanding and respect? What problems might this new world of dialogue create? Will it lead to compromising ones faith? Cardinal Francis Arinze, who has been at the forefront of the Catholic Churchs initiatives in interreligious relations for over 20 years, answers these and many other timely questions in this engaging and enlightening interview. He speaks to the veteran practitioner of interreligious dialogue as well as to the hesitant beginner. There is no more articulate or stronger voice for authentic and productive interreligious dialogue than that of Cardinal Arinze. In the face of religious extremism, increased secularism, and the inequities of globalization, collaborative action to address key global challenges is perhaps the best way for religious communities to achieve what Cardinal Arinze describes as the ultimate goal mutual encouragement in our search for God. Dr. William F. Vendley, Secretary General World Conference of Religions for Peace What Cardinal Arinze shares in this book is extremely timely and helpful for fostering greater interreligious understanding today, and for guiding religious persons in their common effort toward building peace and justice. Description: For over 30 years the World Council of Churches has been involved in interreligious dialogue. In the last decades, there has been an increasing interest in dialogue due to the unexpected return of religion as a reality to reckon with in society and political life. In an unprecedented way in recent years and in numerous parts of the world, many societies are marked by tension and conflict between and within religious communities, yet, where mechanisms for dialogue and encounter exist, there is a greater possibility of fostering deeper knowledge and awareness among people of different religions. Good neighbourliness grows and thrives where there is mutual acceptance and mutual respect. The WCC affirms the importance of interreligious relations and dialogue today as a core issue for its work. Harvesting experiences in dialogue suggests that we are at a critical moment - thus in June 2005, the World Council of Churches organized the 'Critical Moment in Interreligious Relations and Dialogue' conference, facilitating reflection on future orientations in interreligious dialogue. The aim of this book is to share the highlights of the Critical Moment conference and to give food for thought and action to all involved in interfaith dialogue and cooperation. It presents the plenary speeches and a compilation of the working group reports, as well as a summary of the answers from participants to a survey made before the conference. To make the material more alive and useful for those not at the conference, the book includes a study guide, meant for practical use in the local community. It links to issues raised at the conference, and gives background information, thoughts for reflection and questions to work on. Although intended for those who already have some interfaith experience, this book can also be useful to people who are new to the field. It gives insight into current issues and dilemmas and suggestions for further reflection.

Description: An unusual conversation is taking place at the turn of a new millennium. Some Catholics and evangelicals in North America are talking amicably with one another about what they share, where they differ and how they might engage in a common mission within a post-Christian and postmodern society. This book seeks to move that conversation forward. Thomas P. Rausch and Cecil M. Robeck Jr. explore and assess how the conversation has progressed. Robert L. Wilken and Gerald Bray view the doctrine of salvation historically from within early Christian thought and then from an evangelical point of view. Avery Dulles and Timothy George examine the doctrine of the church in terms of ministry and sacraments and the nature of evangelical ecclesiology. Finally, evangelical missionary David E. Bjork tells his unusual story of ministering within the structure of the Roman Catholic Church in France. This is a book for those who want to get in on one of the most important theological conversations taking place today. "This book is an important gift to both Catholics and evangelical Protestants. . . . [Here] are serious-and I think quite successful-efforts to get past the long-standing pattern of talking past each other." Richard Mouw, president, Fuller Theological Seminary "From a reading of the various articles that make up the present book, it is obvious that something of great significance has been taking place in recent years." Edward Idris Cardinal Cassidy, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity

Description: The war in Iraq is over, and we are now facing its aftermath. The searching and divisive questions raised for the churches by the invasion of Iraq linger on. Are there "just wars"? What does the Bible teach about war and violence? What constitutes patriotism when one's nation is at war? Is there theological justification for wars of self-defence or liberation? S. Wesley Ariarajah explores these questions to facilitate ongoing conversation in faith communities. Surveying instances of violence in many regions of the globe, often involving confrontation between religious communities, Ariarajah examines what violence does to those who perpetrate it on others. Moving beyond simplistic notions of 'good' and 'evil' in world affairs, he calls on peoples of faith to counter terror in all its forms through the creation of an 'axis of peace'.

Description: An Ideal Church: A Meditation is just that-a meditation on what our Christian church ought to be. The author takes a hard look at the church as it is right now and also muses on the better community we could create. In the first section Carmody draws on the traditional marks of the church-one, holy, catholic, and apostolic (adding a fifth-ecumenical)-as aspects of this ideal ecclesiology. In the second section, she ponders the notion of the "people of God" as the group that truly enfleshes this "ideal" church. Here she specifically examines the role of the laity, religious, and priests as discusses the institutional and charismatic aspects of the church as forms that can help to carry the people of God to holiness. This thought-provoking, visionary work provides a challenge to the way the church is, as well as a freedom to envision the church the way it could be. It will be of interest to students of ecclesiology and to general readers-Christians of all denominations-who envision the church's potential to be the ideal community.
