Description: The thought of Karl Barth (1886-1968) has undergone a remarkable renewal of interest in the past twenty years. Joseph Mangina's Karl Barth: Theologian of Christian Witness offers a concise, accessible guide to this important Christian thinker. Uniquely among introductions to Barth, it also highlights his significance for Christian ecumenism. The first chapter describes Barth's extraordinary life, from his youthful break with liberalism during the First World War, to his mature theology in the Church Dogmatics. Subsequent chapters offer a detailed reading of this magisterial work, and place Barth in dialogue with five contemporary thinkers: George Lindbeck on revelation, Michael Wyschogrod on election, Stanley Hauerwas on creation, Robert Jenson on reconciliation, and Henri de Lubac on the church. These ecumenical conversations not only set Barth's thinking in greater relief, but serve to demonstrate its continuing theological fruitfulness. The book concludes by examining Barth's wider significance for the church in our time.

Description: James K. Aitken and Edward D. Kessler have assembled here a widely diverse collection of essays on Jewish-Christian relations, a discipline that, compared with other subjects studied in university and religious circles, is relatively young. Jewish-Christian relations is a complex enterprise that cannot be reduced to simple theological or historical narratives; it must take into account politics, sociology, education, language, history, biblical studies, hermeneutics, and theology. The contributors view their particular subject through the lens of all of these disciplines while ably meeting the challenge of looking toward the future.

Description: To educate anyone effectively it is essential to understand their learning style and personality type. In Archetypes for Spiritual Direction, Bruce Tallman applies this principle to the task of spiritual direction, using as his model the "archetypes" identified by noted psychologist Carl Jung.

Archetypes, according to Jung, comprise the contents of the "collective unconscious," the vast universal mind that all human beings share in. Archetypes are power centers hardwired into the male and female psyche/soul that subconsciously control everything we do. They manifest themselves in every culture and every age in healthy and unhealthy ways. The healthy archetypes are inner guides or "heroes" that help us fulfill our destinies.

Tallman describes the way the four foundational heroic archetypes--the Sovereign, Warrior, Seer and Lover and their eight anti-heroic counterparts--the Tyrant, Abdicator, Sadist, Masochist, Manipulator, Fool, Addict and Frigid--affect the way male and female spiritual directors and guides give spiritual guidance. His book also describes how heroic or anti-heroic seekers are formed. And it addresses how seekers can cope with an anti-heroic spiritual director and how all spiritual guides/directors and seekers can become more heroic by activating their healthy archetypes; how all of us can discover the spiritual heroes within.

Archetypes represent a third major educational tool that can be used in spiritual direction and guidance besides the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the Enneagram. There are many books about archetypes and many about spiritual direction, but no other book addresses how archetypes affect the way people do spiritual direction.

Description: Christians understand that the gospel calls them to treat all people with honesty and justice. Yet there are many passages in the Christian scriptures which, if misunderstood, can support a negative and false picture of Jews and Judaism. This danger is dramatically present in the Gospel of John. Although clearly emphasizing the centrality of love, John's gospel also contains broad and polemical statements which have led many readers to conclude that "the Jews" were united as a people in their opposition to Jesus and primarily responsible for his death.

This book is meant to serve preachers, catechists, and students of the Bible who wish to understand the difficult passages of this gospel in a way which is free from inaccuracy and prejudice. Beginning with a survey of the characteristics of the gospel, it offers a discussion of all passages from the Roman Catholic Lectionary for Sundays and Major Feasts which draw from the Gospel of John and contain the potential to misrepresent or denigrate Judaism. Utilizing the official translation of the Catholic Lectionary, it leads the reader through complex historical and linguistic issues so that those who use these texts can proclaim them in conformity to Church teaching and God's love for the Jewish people.

Description: This book is a centenary tribute to the distinguished French Dominican theologian Cardinal Yves Congar (1940-95). In the words of Cardinal Avery Dulles: "No theologian of the twentieth century is more deserving of a commemorative volume than Yves Congar." The primary aim of the present work is to examine Congar's role as theologian of the Church and assess the significance of his contribution. In the context of interdisciplinary scholarship, the volume reflects on Congar's contribution to theology, ecumenism, history of ecclesiology, pneumatology and interreligious dialogue. The contributors, experts in the fields of theology, ecumenism, philosophy and history from nine countries, are in many respects representative of Congar's intellectual and ecumenical interests. An important objective of the work is to facilitate a renewed engagement with the Second Vatican Council. If the volume contributes to making the documents of vatican II more accessible to the modern person and, therefore, more widely read and applied, it will have rendered fitting tribute to Cardinal Congar.

Description: Prayer is central to the Christian life, and therefore to the ecumenical movement. Jesus himself prayed that we 'all may be one' (John 17:21), offering the basis and goal of our search for common confession, witness, service - and prayer. "In God's Hands" offers valuable aids for 'intercessory prayer', prayer on behalf of and in solidarity with others. This book includes prayers and other worship materials from many Christian traditions and communities, enabling the reader to journey in prayer through each week of the year and through all the regions and countries of the world. Descriptions of these nations and people help us to pray for others in an informed way, knowing something of their local situations, possibilities and challenges. This book is the long-awaited, complete revision of the "Ecumenical Prayer Cycle" last issued in 1989. The worship material has been gathered anew, and the country descriptions take into account the momentous religious, cultural and political changes of recent years. Produced under the auspices of the WCC's Faith and Order team, and drawing on all the WCC's worship and editorial resources, this is a rich resource for all who want to be linked in prayer with other Christians, in all their diverse needs and in every land.
