Description: An old-fashioned Christmas, packaged in beautiful illustrations and music. The sights and sounds of Christmases past come to life in this beautiful gift book. With foil, embossing, and a rich, saturated four-color interior full of classic Victorian images, A Victorian Christmas is perfect as a gift eager for a coffee table to adorn with its winsome design. Inside, readers are greeted by inscriptions from postcards and Christmas cards, poems and prose from the early twentieth century, and the accompanying CD lends soft, simple Christmas songs performed by acclaimed mandolinist Butch Baladassari. The result is an experience of Christmas from a bygone era, a unique way to say "Merry Christmas."

Description: This scholarly analysis of our modern celebration of Christmas pulls together a thoroughly convincing case for the widely accepted notion that it is a 19th-century creation, indeed a deliberate reformation and taming of a holiday with wilder pagan origins. Christmas was set at December 25 in the fourth century, not for any biblical link with Christ's birth, but because the church hoped to annex and Christianize the existing midwinter pagan feast. This latter was based on the seasonal agricultural plenty, with the year's food supply newly in store, and nothing to do in the fields. It was a time of drinking and debauchery from the Roman Saturnalia to the English Mummers. The Victorians hijacked the holiday, and Victorian writers helped turn it into a feast of safe domesticity and a cacophonous chime of retail cash registers.

Description: The seasons tell a story. Are you listening? The church year is a uniquely Christian way of marking time. When Kimberlee Conway Ireton began to understand this, even the most ordinary incidents of her life began to resonate with the stories of Scripture. In this book, Kimberlee follows the structure of the liturgical year--from Advent to the second cycle of Ordinary Time--describing the origin of each observance and its ongoing relevance for our lives. In a word, The Circle of Seasons offers you structure--a simple and traditional way of building your life around your faith, rather than the other way around.

Description: Lest you think that Christmas is just a sentimental commercial venture perpetuated by misguided Victorian-era worshippers, Flight of the Reindeer offers proof positive that there is a Santa Claus and yes, reindeer really do know how to fly. Robert Sullivan, a senior editor at Life magazine, diligently gathered documentation from respected scientists, historians, zoologists, and Arctic explorers to prove once and for all that Santa is not just a myth. The gorgeous illustrations, convincing photos, and smoothly written text make this book an ideal gift for children who are teetering on the edge of nonbelief and an even better one for grownups who long ago gave up hope.
