Description: As a nanny, Millicent Fairweather poured her energy and talents into the two young charges under her care--only to have them suddenly and without explanation sent to a boarding school. Bereft and unsure of where life will lead her, she agrees to accompany her sister and brother-in-law to America. They board the Opportunity, confident a better life awaits.

Widower Daniel Clark determines to begin life anew in Gooding, Texas, operating a mercantile. But when his nanny leaves him stranded aboard the ship with his young son, he finds himself in dire need of assistance. Obtaining temporary help from steerage, Daniel is initially taken aback by the pretty bundle of energy who takes over his suite. Yet Miss Fairweather's unique child-rearing techniques and tireless devotion to his son soon win him over.

When tragedy ensues and a whirlwind decision is made, Daniel and Millicent's lives irrevocably intertwine. Will love soon follow?

Review Summary: Not her best story Date: 2008-12-27

Details: I have to agree with other reviews I have seen on this book. The English was terrible and frankly interferred with my pleasure in reading the book. This author has done far better in stories. I found it not romantic enough, the work exhausting and I just was annoyed at the heroine's poor grammar.

Review Summary: Not what I was hoping for... Date: 2008-12-18

Details: "Whirlwind" is the third book in the "Texas Historical Series." The first two, "Fancy Pants" and "Forevermore" were also based in tiny town of Gooding and characters from both books appear in "Whirlwind."
Millicent Fairweather is an imaginative and impetuous nanny to two young girls. So when she is relieved of her position and both girls are sent off to a boarding school, she is devastated. But she trusts in the Lord to provide for her. When her sister Isabel and brother-in-law Frank are finally able to accomplish their dream of immigrating to America and opening their own shop, Millicent joins them. On the journey over, on the ship, Daniel Clark, a widower and a young father, employs Millicent temporarily as his young son's nanny. When Frank dies, Daniel and Millicent marry, so that he may care for both sisters. It isn't hard for him to convince both Millicent and Isabel to join him in Texas, and to join him in his venture in opening his own general store. Daniel discovers that his wife's prior employer is murdered and attempts to find the two little girls, for the sake of his new wife. Like most marriages of convenience, Daniel and Millicent gradually fall in love, but neither admits their feelings until they overcome one last obstacle. The murderer of her employer tracks her down but is injured when he tries to escape. Millicent is amazed to learn that her husband plans to adopt the orphaned daughters of her employer. Of course Daniel and Millicent confess their love and no longer have a marriage of convenience.
Perhaps you can detect my disappointment in this review. By now I should know that since the two first books in the series fell short of the writer's potential, then I shouldn't hold out hope for the third story. I first discovered Cathy Marie Hake reading several shorter stories in Barbour's Heartsong Presents Series. More particularly, in the Chance brothers/family series. She authored most of that series and despite it being predictable, she created some really likeable knight in shining armors. Hake is more than capable of making her heroines plucky and heroes sweet hearted, as she has done before, but in this series and her other, she has just missed her mark.
The one subplot that I did like and wished she had written more in-depth about was the romance between Annie and Phinehas. That one was just bittersweet and would have made a lasting impression on the reader.

Details: Cathy Marie Hake always writes a good story, and this is no exception. I especially like the historic details that she encludes. You won't be disappointed with this book!

Review Summary: Whirlwind Date: 2008-10-06

Details: This is a wonderful book....FUll of hope and love. You have to read it for yourself.

Review Summary: Not a whirlwind book Date: 2008-09-22

Details: I have read other books by Cathy Marie Hake and was greatly pleased. However, this book was not a whirlwind by any means. I thought the book was slow in the beginning because they were on the ship too long. Also, I couldn't help but dislike Mr. Clark and all of his lists he kept having to make. I liked the character of Millicent and that is why I continued reading. While it would be a great book to check out from the library, it certainly wasn't worth the 10 bucks I spent. I am still looking forward to another book by Hake, because this is not her standard.
