Description: Eugene Peterson is convinced that the way we read the Bible is as important as that we read it. Do we read the Bible for information about God and salvation, for principles and "truths" that we can use to live better? Or do we read it in order to listen to God and respond in prayer and obedience? The second part of Peterson’s momentous five-volume work on spiritual theology, Eat This Book challenges us to read the Scriptures on their own terms, as God’s revelation, and to live them as we read them. With warmth and wisdom Peterson offers greatly needed, down-to-earth counsel on spiritual reading. In these pages he draws readers into a fascinating conversation on the nature of language, the ancient practice of lectio divina, and the role of Scripture translations; included here is the "inside story" behind Peterson’s own popular Bible translation, The Message. Countering the widespread practice of using the Bible for self-serving purposes, Peterson here serves readers with a nourishing entrée into the formative, life-changing art of spiritual reading. Description: The New Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible is nothing short of exhaustive. Weighing in at nearly six pounds, this research tool is the revised edition of the legendary classic that generations have come to depend on for biblical research. Nothing has been omitted from the original text published in 1890, but new supplementary material such as "The Laws of the Bible," "Teaching and Illustrations of Christ," and a "Harmony of the Gospels" has been added and existing material has been updated and improved. The "Topical Index" references thousands of verses relating to over 8,000 biblical subjects, names, places, things, concepts, events, and doctrines. In this main section of the concordance, scripture references are placed between a context line and the reference to either the Hebrew or Greek dictionary, making it easier to access all the features of the concordance at once. The most useful improvement is that variant spellings of proper names from modern versions have been cross-referenced. For instance, the person who uses the Revised Standard Version, the New International Version, or the New American Standard Version of the Bible can look up the modern word Abronah, which appears in these versions, and will be directed to Ebronah, the New King James spelling. A computer-generated typesetting, an obvious update from the first version, reads easily and provides design and format improvements. Any biblically based library would be incomplete without this indispensable edition. --Jill Heatherly

Description: The Bible, author Kenneth Davis explains, fits that definition of a "classic" offered by Mark Twain: a book that people praise and don't read. But this entertaining historical study will likely compel listeners to reach for their dusty copies of the world's most-owned but least-understood anthology once again. And not simply because the author reminds us of the drama and intrigue, the tales of rape, impaling, and ethnic cleansing routinely found in its pages. Davis paints the larger historical context in which the Bible was written, providing a sense of the culture and environment in which the familiar stories came to life. Calling on new research and scholarship into the Bible's composition, he provides fascinating background to dimly remembered stories that gives them renewed impact. Using a series of easy-to-follow questions and answers, he offers explanations about when and by whom the Bible was written; how the stories of other traditions influenced the Judeo-Christian teachings; where the Garden of Eden might have been located; why an earthquake may have played a part in the "walls tumbling down" at Jericho; why Jesus may not have said everything we think he did, and much more. He also points out that mistranslations from the original Hebrew have made their way into modern versions of the Bible, explaining where and how they occurred. Conceding that his program will anger some, as it challenges many cherished but mistaken assumptions about the Bible, Davis also hopes that listeners recognize that Christian belief and uncovering the truth are not at odds in this program, but rather that learning and wisdom, even when they reach unsettling conclusions, can ultimately complement faith. Description: - The Torah (Law of Moses)--is it in full force today? Yeshua (Jesus) said, "Don't think that I have come to abolish the Torah... I have come not to abolish, but to complete." What did he mean? - Sha'ul (Paul) wrote, "All Israel will be saved." Was he speaking of all Jews? Messianic Jews (Jews who believe Yeshua is the Messiah)? The Church? Who is Israel? - Why did Yeshua juxtapose the saying, "Do not store up for yourselves wealth here on earth" and "The eye is the light of the body"? Dr. David Stern, a Messianic Jew living in Jerusalem, speaks to these and other issues in the Jewish New Testament Commentary. In this companion volume to his widely read and highly acclaimed "Jewish New Testament," he offers an exciting and original way of understanding the New Testament from a Jewish point of view.

Description: A daily devotional, a Bible, and a compassionate collection of thoughts and meditations for the modern woman all rolled into one, The Women's Devotional Bible is a truly heavenly package. Featuring the complete text of the New International Version of the Bible, a subject index, a reading plan, and introductions to each book, this Bible has everything you need to guide you in your regular devotions. But the additional thoughts, poems, and daily and weekend devotions from women serving God all over the world are exceedingly good encouragement to dive deeper into the Word and search for the heart of God in your own everyday life. In a time when it is increasingly difficult to separate what it means to be a woman of the Lord from the expectations of the world, this Bible holds out helping hands of rest, peace, hope, and strength. --Courtenay Kehn
