Description: Shashmaqam, the classical music of the Uzbeks and Tajiks, can best be described as a highly evolved relation of romantic lieder, in which the poem becomes the music and vice-versa. This Grammy-nominated second installment reveals still more of the passion and melodic genius inherent in traditions of Central Asia, as sinuous mixed voices keen and soar over plucked, strummed and bowed strings (the tanbur, dutar, and sato, respectively) and clopping, rattling doira frame drums. If the scales feel unfamiliar and take some getting used to, and the vocals, with their minutely calibrated hair-spin curves and call-and-response patterns, seem a bit strange, a single thorough listen will not only acclimate the ear but reveal a myriad of unexpected delights. The universal preoccupations of love and sex are described amid images of flower-bedecked, blushing girls and sighing swains. But the music emanates from someplace more primal, from the very life-force capable of driving men and women mad with bliss and fruitless longing. Co-produced by The Aga Khan Trust for Culture and Smithsonian Folkways, this ongoing series is helping to de-mystify a proud, tender, magical and ineffably beautiful family of traditions. The exhaustive liner notes and an invaluable accompanying DVD showcase the present performers, their history, and repertoire. Fascinating geographical and cultural information and glossaries are also provided. --Christina Roden

Description: Yol Bolsin is an intriguing new export traveling west on Asia's Silk Road. The debut of 25-year-old Uzbeki singer and doutar player Sevara Nazarkhan, the album combines the rich musical tradition of her Central Asian country and fuses it with the modern sounds of noted French-Algerian producer Hector Zazou. Like much of the best stuff to come out on Real World, the combination here is timely and timeless, with Zazou's modern sounds simply providing a tasteful backing to the plucked, lutelike lines of Nazarkhan and fellow doutar player Toir Kuziyev. A pop star in Tashkent, capital of Uzbekistan, Nazarkhan has a soaring, conservatory-trained voice that conveys myriad emotions with range and an intonation enriched with deft shading. It's a voice that puts her in a league with such modern global pop divas as Natacha Atlas, Gigi, and Sheila Chandra. Particularly strong are the hauntingly ambient "Galdir," the undulating "Moghulchai Navo," and the surprisingly funky title track. --Tad Hendrickson

Description: While the Sufi musical tradition of Pakistan is well documented in the popular press because of the work of the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and his predecessors, the Sabri Brothers (both represented with excellent tracks in this collection), the wealth of great art from this religious culture is often left unheard. This two-CD set rectifies the problem with style and beauty. Not only Pakistan, but Egypt, Senegal, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and many other countries in Asia and the Middle East have rich traditions of devotional music from loosely defined Sufi roots, from the simplest solo singer to lush orchestras of percussion, harmoniums, and massed voices. Each of the 21 tracks on Sufi Soul is worth your attention: the incredible passion of a women's choir from Uzbekistan; the sparse, gentle flute solo of ney master Hassan Kassayi; a rare tanbur (lute) and vocal track by Ostad Elahi; a Balachi song for sorud (fiddle). There are standout tracks that need to be mentioned. The frame drum and qanun (zither) come together in Ensemble Al-Kindi for a dramatic, almost avant-garde feeling. An amazing Persian singer, Khatereh Parvaneh, presents the poetry of Rumi in a piece in dastgah shour; she performs with minimum ornamentation to maximum effect, accompanied only by a hammered zither. Senegalese artist Musa Dieng Kala offers one of the most stirring vocal pieces on the set, an a cappella masterwork. As with most of the Network sets, this is a gorgeous package, with great photos and excellent liner notes on the history and the music, in English, French, and German. --Louis Gibson

Description: Shashmaqam, a New York based ensemble recognized in their homeland for their extraordinary musical talent, has been performing music and dance from their native Uzbekistan and Tadzhikistan since 1983. Their music reflects the many diverse cultures of the region. Perhaps the most distinctive element of their sound is a dramatic and disciplined vocal tradition. Fatima Kuinova, founding member and vocalist, was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts in 1992. "... brings to life the rich and diverse musical traditions of Central Asia, where Jewish and Moslem musicians long co-existed in a flourishing cultural symbiosis." -- NAIRD Notes

Description: Yulduz Usmanova is from Uzbekistan, along the fabled Silk Road trade route in Central Asia. Her singing is a fusion of intricately coded styles, which includes borrowings from Turkish and Persian rhythms and scales. She is accompanied by the tanbur (a long-necked lute) and the doira (a hand drum) but often wields a wicked backbeat and sees no reason why she should not use the latest electronic percussion and synthesizers. She is a folk singer and a club diva, a Moslem woman who wears miniskirts and was elected to her country's parliament, and an international figure who resides in a rural area outside of Tashkent. Her elders admire her espousal of endangered folkways while young girls, emerging from the dual oppressions of Soviet life and religious fundamentalism, cherish her as a role model. Yulduz is a bundle of contradictions but knows exactly who she is. --Christina Roden

Description: Yulduz Usmanova's music is an exceptional fusion in the international pop music scene. The 32-year-old graduate of the department for oriental music at the conservatory in Tashkent composes her songs on the basis of old folk songs that are still being sung in the usbekian villages today. This traditional usbekian folklore, that possesses Turkish, Persian and Central Asian influences, is being mixed by her with western Rock, Pop and Dance styles. "When I started, I thought this traditional music has to be preserved", explains Yulduz. "Only that it needed an update." The single compositions are being carried by traditional instruments such as the Tambour (Central Asian long neck lute) or a Doira (original usbekian percussion instrument) and modern electronic. The result is an interesting synthesis, where the single styles are not deluded, but used in its original form. In Central Asia, Yulduz has advanced to a superstar using these "EthnoCrossover"variation. In Europe, in music magazines and feature sections, she was highly praised for her first three albums "Alma Alma" (1993), "Jannona" (1995) and "Binafscha" (1996). The album "Binafscha" (1996) unites temperament, rhythmic songs, melodious songs and also melancholic ballads. For the first time, the entire album was recorded at the Calren Studios in Freiburg, Germany; Zeus B. Held (Transvision Vamp, Nina Hagen...) produced and mixed the CD in cooperation with popular DJ's in the multicultural hit metropolis London. The first single, is the rhythmic title song "Binafscha" with additional remix versions. There have also been changes in her texts: In the past, she often used phrases from the Koran or the Bible. She also borrowed from the works of classical poets. In the mean time, she uses texts from contemporary poets. "I want to dissociate myself from the classical poets, because it is easy to interpret meanings, that weren't even meant. Now I want to concentrate on the contemporary poets, because their thoughts and feelings reflect more of what we know", explains the singer. "Onajon" (Mother), for example, is a text from Muhamad Yussuf, who already contributed lyrics to the last CD. The song describes the mother/son relationship. Very often, the songs can be interpreted on different levels and metaphors from Central Asian poets are used to express an incident. The title song "Binafscha" (Violet) doesn't just stand for the blooming of this first spring flower in Uzbekistan. "In a sense, the flower is like a young girl, that is slowly developing through her puberty into a woman." The new compositions document further perfection in songwriting and in the arrangements from the usbekian artist and with her powerful, but at the same time, sensible voice, Yulduz is able to mediate the feelings and moods of the lyrics. The Compilation "the selection album", with a length of 75 minutes, is an interesting retrospective of Yulduz Usmanova´s work so far. The CD also contains 3 unreleased titles as Bonustracks.
