Description: The party line on most Windham Hill products seems to be that it's either the greatest stuff since wave machines, or that it all sounds alike. On a Starry Night, with its collection of world songs and reputable artists such as Flora Purim, Airto Moreira, the Turtle Island String Quartet, and others, does lean toward a seamlessly understated, homogeneous quality that is broken only occasionally by Bobby McFerrin's piece and a couple of others. That said, there can hardly be a more mellow or sonorous album of kid's music anywhere. Starry Night could calm a nursery with no nurses; why, it could even soothe the pained yelps at the dog pound--and turn a freeway full of bumper-to-bumper sour pusses into pussycats. Effective? You've heard of mind control, haven't you? --Martin Keller

Description: An exceptional gathering of musicians from around the global village set a new standard for Christmas records on World Christmas. The wonderful variety of songs resonate with love of the season, and there isn't a novelty tune to be heard. From Africa come Cesaria Evora, Angelique Kidjo, Papa Wemba, and Lokua Kanza, all bearing gifts of heartfelt music. The jazz world cooks up a feast, with delectable chestnuts from Joshua Redman, Marcus Miller, Dianne Reeves, Mino Cinelu, John Scofield, the Wild Magnolias, and the Caribbean Jazz Project. The Latin sound is present with Ruben Blades, Yomo Toro, Dave Valentin, the Gipsy Kings, and the gifted Cuban a cappella group Vocal Sampling. Brazil sends the angelic voices of Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, and Eliane Elias; and India's Zakir Hussain adds spice to "We Three Kings." There isn't a clinker in this stocking full of music--and it's for a good cause, too! Proceeds benefit the International Special Olympics. --Jeff Grubb

Description: The soundtrack from Woman on Top, starring Madrid-born bombshell Penelope Cruz as the beauty and brains behind a popular cooking show, is the perfect introduction to the Brazilian sound--and just might live up to the label's promise that it's "destined to bring Bossa Nova music to the world" (though bossa nova has long been popular in the West, albeit in specialized circles). The highly listenable album features contemporary Brazilian artists such as singer-songwriter Lenine; pop-rocker and Joao Gilberto sound-alike Paulinho Moska; and the three-DJ collective Bossa Cuca Nova putting a new spin on a classic Geraldo Pereira tune. It also includes gems such as Maria Creuza and her delicately wavering voice, and guitarist Dori Caymmi performing one of his father's songs. Mellow yet upbeat, it's relaxation music that won't put you to sleep. --Jamie FitzGerald

Description: There’s no doubt that singer Lila Downs' profile is on the rise after her appearance in the film Frida and on the accompanying soundtrack, which led to a performance at the 2003 Academy Awards. The dividing lines between cultures and classes are major themes throughout the Mexican-American singer's decade-long career; but whereas 2001’s Border is more angry about the disparities, One Blood: Una Sangre is more inclusive, if only for the hopeful note of unity sounded in the English-language version of the title cut (the album has two distinctly different readings of the song sung, respectively, in English and Spanish). While much of the cumbia-based, genre-breaking material here is original, Downs and her band completely revamp two covers: Ritchie Valens classic "La Bamba" features techno beats and African drumming; the folk song "La Cucaracha" opens with wailing guitar before settling into a gentle reggae groove. Stylistically restless and lyrically didactic, One Blood: Una Sangre is as ambitious as it is beautiful. –-Tad Hendrickson

Description: Since her father was a director of Portela, one of Rio's most prominent escolas de samba (samba schools -- the huge, wildly costumed gatherings of percussionists, instrumentalists, singers, and dancers that make the annual carnival so unforgettable), Brazil's most-famous export is obviously in Marisa Monte's very blood. Thus, it's surprising that she's only now gotten around to recording an album completely dedicated to the style, but happily, it's turned out to be worth the wait. She wraps her dulcet, spicy mezzo-soprano, with its clarinet-like timbre that sometimes recalls that of Gal Costa, around a well-chosen set of hip-swinging charmers, accompanied by traditional instruments like cavaquinho (a harp-like small guitar) and assorted drums and shakers long associated with the genre, plus tubas, woodwinds, strings, nostalgic Fender Rhodes organs, and, notably, the guitar of Paulinho da Viola. Songwriters of various periods are represented, including Jayme Silva from the fifties, Moraes Moreira from the 1960s, and for modern times, Carlinhos Brown and the singer herself. Hers is the kind of artistry that awes as it soothes; it draws no attention to itself yet every song flows into another like pearls on a string. Lushly sensual and suavely intimate, the lady could melt a heart of stone. --Christina Roden

Description: With this dreamy collection of soothing lullabies and playful ballads, the supergroup formed by singer/producer Marisa Monte, percussionist Carlinhos Brown, and former Titas member Arnaldo Antunes has proved once and for all that Brazilian music has moved forward beyond the shadows of the seminal tropicalia movement. Favoring a subtle, understated compositional environment, the members of the trio clearly relish each other's company. Their voices come together harmoniously, with a handful of guest musicians adding minimal touches of piano and guitar. From the anthemic declaration of purpose "Carnavalia" to the uplifting charm of the bouncy "Passe Em Casa" and the peaceful aura that permeate the Christmas song "Mary Cristo," the moods here offer an antidote to the unapologetic aggressiveness of most contemporary music. "Tribalistas" is more than just the best Brazilian album of the year. It is also an instant classic, a musical message of hope and a joy to listen to from beginning to end. --Ernesto Lechner

Description: This immaculately conceived and packaged fundraiser for the AIDS awareness foundation is a sharp tribute to Brazilian pop. David Byrne, Milton Nascimento, PM Dawn, Stereolab, Gilberto Gil, and Crystal Waters (vamping through "The Boy from Ipanema") are among those weighing in with sophisticated tunes that will cross from cocktail hipsters to the leading edge of the mass audience. --Jeff Bateman

Description: This is Marisa Monte's first CD since 2002, and it's also the companion release to her samba-centered Universo Au Meu Redor recording. On this project, Monte reunites with her Tribalistas partners, Carlinhos Brown and Arnaldo Antunes, along with special guests including cellist Jaques Morelenbaum and pianist Joao Donato. The vibe is what you would expect from Monte: saudade-soaked lyrics with dreamy, layered synth and electric keyboards draped over Brazilian percussion and guitars. Having a baby has mellowed her out, as evidenced by the laid-back lilt on "A Prineira Pedra" and "Pra Ser Sincero" and the breezy backbeats of "Levante." "O Rio" was co-written by Seu Jorge, and the title track is what you're probably going to hear on your iPod. Clearly, there are a lot of Brazilian singers out there, but Monte's musical and emotional growth make her stand out. --Eugene Holley, Jr.
