Description: OUTSTANDING ALBUM Brassard has a knack for lush backgrounds and warm, rich musical textures. It feels like being outside. d call this more of a new-age acoustic folk/rock CD. The ballads are breathy and mysterious, and the faster numbers have the effect of being echoed over a mountaintop. Brassard has a knack for lush backgrounds and warm, rich musical textures. It feels like being outside. From the very first track, it s hard to classify Brassard s singing style. Kind of like a blend of Bob Dylan, Mark Knopfler, and Randy Newman. That approach serves him well on a lot of these tracks, like End of June . It s a cry for love mixed with a message about respecting the earth. He is a smart composer. The instrumental Between Heaven and Paradise is a standout for it's melody on the guitar and lullaby vibe. He also surprised me with Respect, a sudden burst of garage rock, again with stellar guitar work. Brassard doesn't do anything halfway. These songs are complex and enveloping, full of atmosphere and life. I keep coming back to that spiritual, new age feel infusing the whole project. I d like to see him team up with Enya. A MUST HAVE

Description: The Nunavik Concert was held in early August of 1993 in the Innalik school gym. This 11 track recording captures some of the highlights of the show featuring artists from Nunavik and Nunavut. The Salluit Band kick things off with a stellar performance of Takunnanguarit, a popular hit on radio stations across Nunavik. There's incredible variety to be found here, including a rare recording of Jewish Harp, played with conviction by Minnie Palliser. Also of note is a series of throat songs by Annie Alaku and Sarah Sivuarapik, which together run for close to eight minutes, capturing the complete atmosphere of a throat singing performance, complete with giddy laughter. Producer André Brassard includes on of his own compositions, a song called The Hunt, providing an enjoyable contrast with the many different styles contained in this fine live recording.

Description: The 24 tracks performed by 9 different artists cover a wide variety of styles. While most are Inuit, this recording contains tracks by Cree, Dene, and the Selkirk First Nation. John Landry's original contributions are worth the price of admission alone. The icing on the cake is William Tagoona's huskily whispered "Mary" at the close of "What Child is This?". Originally recorded by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, this Christmas compilation also contains tracks by Sally Tatty Curley, Charlie Panigoniak and Lorna Tasseor, Kenny Mianscum, Peter and Susan Aningmiuq, Madeline Allakariallak, the Ajaaja Choir, and Jerry Alfred Good liner notes with performer biographies.

Description: Inuutsiarit stands out as the top hit of this new album, Inuuqatik, released by Inukshuk Productions this spring. Over the nine tracks, Charlie Ningiuk-originally from Iqaluit but now living in Inukjuak-covers progressive rock for the most part, and some easy listening. There's a nice fuzz-guitar sound throughout this well-recorded CD.
