Description: Noted designer Mahiro Maeda gives this sci-fi adventure a striking, muted look that mixes elements of Buck Rogers, Weimar Germany, and Napoleonic France. Childhood friends Claus and Lavie dream of becoming a top Vanship team: daring pilots who serve as mail couriers, flying their small ships to dangerous destinations. Just as they're about to win an important race and establish the reputation they desire, Claus insists they stop to aid a disabled ship. The pilot entrusts them with Al, a mysterious little girl who is being pursued by an angular mecha-ship. Although Lavie and Claus are clearly in over their heads, they promise to see Al is taken to safety. The storytelling in this new action-adventure is considerably less polished than its original visuals, and the filmmakers fail to set up the odd, war-torn world of the series satisfactorily. (Rated 13 and older: violence, minor profanity, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Review Summary: light hearted action series Date: 2008-10-04

Details: This review is for the entire series. 1st off the animation in this series is amazing. (MOST things involving Gonzo and or Geneon are). The sound track fits the events well. The character development is sufficient. The DVD packaging has cool hologram effects. The series focuses on the relationship between to kids who both lost their fathers to an aircraft accident which motivates them to learn how to fly and soon become one of the worlds best team pilots. The story gets in dept when the 2 teens are then entangled in a war between 2 feuding factions. Over all the episodes of this light hearted action series flow- even the filler episodes are easy to view and by no time the series ends.

Review Summary: First Impression: Whoa Date: 2006-02-09

Details: I'm going to start this review by saying that Last Exile is a stunning series, at least from what I saw in the first volume. The quality of the animation is excellent, the character design, done by the now famous Range Murata, superb, and the story, up to the point where I'm at, flows smoothly from episode to episode. And, not to forget, GONZO adds its flare with the CG animation, something they've since mastered from the time of Blue Submarine #6.

Starting with this volume, the story follows two "vanship"--a vehicle used for racing and delivering high-risk mail--pilots who are almost instantly sucked into the ongoing war between two forces when they accept a job to deliver a certain letter to a high ranking official. Though this battle is basically set to introduce the setting, it shows just how good the animation in this series will be, as well as introducing a few characters in the process. Later is when the real story begins, when Claus and Lavie enter a race they are unable to finish because of a wreck. Following the wrecked vanship, they find a dying man and a little girl. The man asks them to take care of the little girl, whose name is Al, for him. Claus, a boy with more morals than he probably should have, agrees to take the girl, and so starts the series of Last Exile (more happens, but I won't spoil it here).

Though I will admit that the early moments of this anime are confusing, as it doesn't explain much, it does leave the promise that eventually at least some of the questions will be answered, and the others will be left to our own assumptions (as is the wont of anime). But as an action-adventure series, few really stand up to this series in scope. The world in which this series is placed is huge, and the cast of characters to accommodate this world is just as large, and most are unique, either in appearance or character. Plus, the moments of air combat and high flying acrobats are rousing to say the least. And a lot of this is accompanied by a perfectly matched, airy-sounding soundtrack.

If the rest of the series is as good as a the first volume, then Last Exile will soon become one of the legendary anime out, a list that is continually getting bigger with GONZO titles. It's somewhat like Steamboy mixed with Blue Submarine #6. Therefore, this series is for anyone who enjoyed either of these movies. Also, if you're a GONZO fan, put Last Exile at the top of your list of GONZO titles to pick up.

Review Summary: TO THE SKIES!!!! Date: 2005-09-03

Details: When i watched the first DVD i was sceptical, everyone talks about this series because of it's slow and confusing start (wich is true, i know now), this anime really takes off on the second, maybe the third dvd, but believe me, once you get to find the "i dont know what" special thing about the Last Exile, you're hooked! I consider myself a true fan now, and im not an anime enthusiast. Just as lovely as Macross, but without mechas, these people ride Vanships, and not as long, wich is good, some animes take ages to end. Oh, and by the way, GREAT ENDING.
You will love it!

Review Summary: there is a reason for all the 5 star ratings Date: 2005-08-21

Details: yes there is a reason everyone except one reviewer gave this five stars(frankly I dont know what anime that guy watched because last exile is awesome) This is without a doubt one of the best animated shows to date. It doesnt ever fall into a predictable pattern like some anime, giving each episode a fresh dstinct feel.Im not going to explain the plot (marc ruby did a fine job of that) but I will say that its original and completely demolishes most of what hollywood can and probably will ever make...the characters are all very likeable and believable..and the relationships between these characters are subtle and also very belivable. Also the dub is fantastic, for once I can truly say that an anime dub is on par with the original japaneese. Great characters, amazing anime mixed with cg,and a truly memorable plot all combine to make one of the best animes ever created....and definetely my favorite

Review Summary: Great Long and very involved. Date: 2005-07-24

Details: I was blown away with this series. I have looked for something else like it and the only thing that comes close is Miyazaki's work. I can compare it to his work mainly because the world that is created so do different that at first you can hardly believe your eyes but it is also so impressive that rapidly you suspend any disbelief. If your a fan of Miyazaki then this is a series to get into.
