Description: Based on the manga by Gosho Aoyama, Case Closed (Meitantei Conan, "Famous Detective Conan," a playoff the original title of Hayao Miyazaki's Sherlock Hound) ran for 12 seasons in Japan. Seventeen-year-old Jimmy Kudo is an ace detective, but when he witnesses a blackmail payoff, two thugs in black give him a poison that turns him into a little boy. To hide his identity he takes the name of Conan Edogawa--from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Japanese mystery writer Ranpo Edogawa. His former girlfriend Rachel Moore and her hare-brained detective father take Conan in. Trapped in a puny body, Conan solves crimes, sometimes aided by the kids in the Junior Detective League. Fortunately, his old friend Dr. Agasa supplies him with useful inventions, including a solar-powered skateboard and shoes that give his diminutive legs more strength. Nancy Drew might envy the keen powers of observation and even keener deductive skills Jimmy/Conan employs to determine the perpetrators of baffling murders, robberies, and kidnappings. But no one takes a crime-solving eight-year-old seriously, Conan uses a bowtie that disguises his voice to make it appear Detective Moore solved the crimes. The one case he never cracks is the identity of the men who poisoned him. Case Closed (1996) scored a huge hit in Japan: it ran for over 500 episodes and spawned 13 features and seven OAVs. It's gradually built an audience in America, where fans are glad to know that when Jimmy--or Conan--is on the case, "One Truth Prevails!" Description: Conan Edogawa, the hero of the popular series Case Closed (originally Meitantei Conan, "Famous Detective Conan," 1996) is a high-school sleuth trapped in an elementary school body. Thugs involved in a blackmail payoff gave 17-year-old ace detective Jimmy Kudo a poison that turned him into a little boy. To disguise himself, Jimmy took the name of Conan Edogawa (from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Japanese mystery writer Ranpo Edogawa) and moved in with his former girlfriend Rachel Moore and her addled detective father Richard. With the help of some inventions from his friend Dr. Agasa, Conan/Jimmy applies his extraordinary powers of observation and deduction to solving baffling murders, only to see the credit go to Richard Moore. The writers do a good job of creating mini-mysteries that are different enough from each other to generate suspense. Only rarely do they repeat themselves--although an awful lot of phone lines got cut in those pre-cell days--or go over the top: In the two-part case "No Immunity For The Diplomat," a combination of alcohol and fever returns Jimmy to his proper form, but only briefly. But, as Conan complains in Episode #38, he never learns any more about the men who poisoned him. Case Closed ran for over 500 episodes (more than twice as many as Naruto), and American fans know that whenever Conan/Jimmy is on a case, "One Truth Prevails!" Time Bombed Skyscraper pits Conan against a serial arsonist and a bomber who threatens to destroy several buildings and a train line in Tokyo. Are there links between the criminals that would escape the eyes of a less extraordinary detective? Handicapped by his pint-sized body, Conan has to pursue the case as best he can, often using Detective Moore and others as stand-ins. The filmmakers stick very close to the TV program and anyone who enjoys the series will enjoy this feature, and vice versa.
