Description: The millennial edition of TV's longest-running family drama gets off to a stressful start when Eric Camden (Stephen Collins) has a heart attack. It turns out to be a mild one, but sets the tone for much of the season. From now on, the minister and father of seven is going to try to take things easier. Suffice to say, the new touchy-feely dad drives the other Camdens crazy, but they do their best to support his recovery. Meanwhile, college sophomore Matt (Barry Watson) finally flies the coop and gets an apartment with family friend John (Chaz Lamar Shepherd, who becomes a regular cast member) and continues to see girlfriend Shana (Maureen Flannigan). Other developments include a spiky 'do for 13-year-old Simon (David Gallagher), community service for Mary (Jessica Biel) due to vandalism ("Sin and Expiation"), and a disappointing diagnosis for Annie's father ("Forget Me Not"). That leaves Lucy (Beverley Mitchell), who decides what to do with her life, Ruthie (Mackenzie Rosman), who gets her first boyfriend, and the twins (Myrinda and Zachary Brino), who celebrate birthday number one. The show also widens its scope to tackle concerns outside the home, like the treatment of women in Afghanistan ("Yak Sada") and the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II ("Dirty Laundry"). As with previous years, season four ends with some surprises. In this case, Matt and Mary make crucial decisions about their futures. Eric and Annie (Catherine Hicks) are particularly upset by Mary’s choice, so much so that touchy-feely dad (briefly) becomes furious dad. Guest stars include Soul Food's Irma P. Hall ("All by Myself"), Moonlighting's Allyce Beasley ("Liar, Liar"), and 'N Sync's Lance Bass ("Who Do You Trust"). --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description: For two seasons, there was one set of parents and five children. During 7th Heaven's third, Annie (Catherine Hicks) gives birth to a sixth…and a seventh. That's right--the same year she and husband Eric (Stephen Collins) celebrate their 20th anniversary--Annie has twins. As for the other kids: Matt (Barry Watson) tries living off campus, but returns home when things don't work out. Mary (Jessica Biel) gets her driver's license, Lucy (Beverley Mitchell) gets a boyfriend, Simon (David Gallagher) gets a girlfriend, and Ruthie (Mackenzie Rosman) remains the most precocious member of the Camden household. Since 7th Heaven is an issue-oriented show and since the Camden brood are basically good, it's up to their friends and neighbors to generate the bulk of the trouble. This season's problems include underage drinking ("Drunk Like Me"), cutting ("Cutters"), child abuse ("The Legacy"), and infidelity ("We the People"). Granted, the Camden kids aren't perfect--Mary does skip one class and Matt handles an ex-girlfriend's engagement poorly--but they make most others look like hooligans in comparison. Third year guest stars include Ray Walston ("Home of the Brave"), Tim Conway and Ruth Buzzi ("Here Comes Santa Claus"), Phyllis Diller ("Nobody Knows..."), and future big screen stars Alison Lohman (White Oleander) and Michael Peña (World Trade Center), who both appear in "Let's Talk About Sex." Ed Begley Jr. also drops by a few times as the doctor who delivered Matt 19 years ago, returns to deliver twin brothers Sam and David, and woos a certain member of the extended Camden clan. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description: Unlike the Brady Bunch, the Camdens of Seventh Heaven aren't a blended family. And unlike the Partridge Family, they aren't a band. They're just a family--a large, if normal family with normal problems and concerns. A little like the Waltons, perhaps, but set in the present day. The parents are Eric (Stephen Collins from All the President's Men), a minister, and Annie (Catherine Hicks from Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home), a homemaker. They live in the suburbs of Glenoak, California, with their five children: 16-year-old Matt (Barry Watson), 14-year-old Mary (Jessica Biel), 12-year-old Lucy (Beverley Mitchell), 9-year-old Simon (David Gallagher), and 5-year-old Ruthie (Mackenzie Rosman). By the end of the pilot ("Anything You Want"), they'll add the dog Happy to their household. Created by Barbara Hampton (Blossom) and produced by Aaron Spelling (Beverly Hills 90210), Seventh Heaven premiered on the WB in 1996 and would become its most enduring hit. It may lack a gimmick, but this heartwarming family drama doesn't lack a theme: communication. And since the Camdens are a minister's family, faith comes up often, as well, which gives the show something in common with such otherwise disparate programs as Touched by an Angel and Joan of Arcadia. Throughout 1996-1997, the Camdens would deal with many tough issues, both internal and external, including teen pregnancy ("Family Secrets"), death ("In the Blink of an Eye"), racism ("The Color of God"), spousal abuse ("What Will People Say"), and alcoholism ("Last Call for Aunt Julie"). In the years to come, the cast would have their own real-life issues with which to contend, such as Watson's battle with cancer (after taking 2003 off to recover, he would return in 2004) and the gradual loss of Biel (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) to the movies. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
