Review Summary: Hallmark and a Keystone Guide to Reading Comprehension
Date: 2008-11-29
Details: Nanci Bell is a pioneer in the field of reading comprehension and literacy interventions. This book is an excellent step-by-step guide to helping children learn to understand and communicate what they read. This work is also extremely helpful in working with children who have Autism. Children with Autism tend to struggle with visual imagery which impairs oral and written communication. This is an awesome and innovative approach to providing support for children with disabilities in developing visual imagery.
The reason that I gave this book only 4 stars is that Lindamood-Bell tends to be overly protective of their 'intellectual property'. Lindamood-Bell is a well-run chain of reading intervention clinics around the country. I know that many companies have falsely claimed affiliation with Lindamood-Bell and there are justifiable concerns due to this issue. However, Nanci Bell and Phyllis Lindamood have quite possibly the best evidence-based reading intervention approach - anywhere - at their fingertips. Rather than threatening to sue the practitioners who use their approach, why not set up training and certification programs to help these professionals? Further, teachers in the public schools could greatly benefit from these methods - why not offer certification to them as well? SO MANY children could use these methods! It would be great of Nanci Bell would make the more accessable to more children.
